  • XD40 - I noticed something odd? Or is it common?

I looked at my XD's spent casings and noticed that it looks like the firing pin is glancing slightly before fully punching the primer. almost like it starts to hit off center and corrects itself. Is that a typical XD thing, or should I call the factory? I don't think it's dangerous now... but my concern would be potential damage to the firing pin in the future.

Probably a firing pin wipe. Pin strikes the primer... boom.. as the case ejects, the pin isn't retracted fully, so the primer drags across the pin, creating the depression you describe.

Yes, i know the XD40 is striker fired... same concept though..

Perfectly normal. If it looks REALLY bad, give the extractor and striker pin channel a nice through cleaning and lubing.

That's normal. The firing pin strike on the primer will actually look more squared off than a pure circle.

Just to beat a dead horse, my XD40 service did the same. Totally normal.

Not an issue. Actually in my experience the XD's are the most reliable guns on the market. I've never had one come into the shop for repair, I can't even say that about glocks.

My only compaint about the XD is the sights, I want to meat the gorilla who installs them, cause about 75% of the factory sights I've dealt with on the XD's are on so tight I have to cut them out.

LOL, get an arbor press. That's how I removed mine with ease.

What the hell! I'll chime in as well. My XD-40 does exactly the same thing. I bought one of the first that hit the market and it's minus the block lettering on the slide. It's special

I've even tried the arbor press method on em, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It only takes about a minute to cut the sights (well rear sight, front sight is never a prob) out using the mill though, just throw a 1/4 end mill in there and go nuts.
