is this a good idea for a beginer?

I dont know much about ar builds but i am thinkin about buying a lower bfore 1/1/14 and saving it till i am ready/ knowledgeable enough to build a rifle out of it.
Does just buying the lower save me from registration or is there other parts that should be bought before reg. Too?
I thought i would ask you guys first since ive gotten some good help bfore...thanks...

Just buy an 80% lower and you can finish it yourself!!!

If you don't want to go that route, buying a completely milled lower is a very wise decision. Heck, buy two.
    1A - 2A= -1A :(

LOL. Why is an 80% the answer for everything. It aint.

Just buy a lower or two or three or four. Yes, it will save you from registration but you need to do it soon. Not sure if picking up on the 1st means registration too.

Get after a lower or 2 RIGHT NOW. Still a few days wiggle room in the 10 day wait to pick up before 1/1/2014 (or DROS before 1/1/2014?). Firgure out how to finish the build later. Ain't too hard if I can do it !!

Ya go buy yourself a few lowers, and do it now. Building them takes all of 20 minutes once you get it down

I think he's saying that whenever someone asks about a lower, people tell them to go 80%. I personally think it's stupid, id rather buy a lower and build an AR within 2 weeks

Buy as many as you can afford, and build them at your leisure! The serialized portion (lower) is the only part (so far) that has a registration requirement (1/1/14). So buy away and have a little fun! Of course you'll need to factor in the cost of parts too!

Building an AR from a stripped lower using a complete upper is about as beginner friendly as home gunsmithing gets (if you can even call it that). If you've ever assembled your own computer, figured out how to get your blueray, cable box, and surround system all working together, or assembled a LEGO set, you should have all the necessary skills.

On the doing it before Jan 1 thing, yes I don't like at all that registration is starting, but if you've got registered pistols already then I don't really see much point in the rush to beat the clock.

I'd buy a few, and I'd try to get some variety in there if you could. Maybe mix it up with a .308 and a few .223's. And I wouldn't mess with an 80% until next year when that's the only way to avoid registration.

                            buy two
It takes a lot of balls to play golf the way I do.

Except that SCOTUS has ruled that gov'ts can't ban handguns because they are "in common use". On banning AR rifles they haven't spoken yet.

OP, I picked up a stripped lower last month just for the reason you asked about. I can build it later whenever I get around to getting the other parts and I don't have to worry about registering it, yet.
