    shipping firearm

What's the word on shipping firearms? I own a firearm now that I want to send out to CCR for some work. Can i just plop the gun into a box and send via UPS? Does it have to go through a FFL? Can CCR just send it back to me? Are there any stupid laws come January affecting this? Thanks!

I don't remember if they have their FFL or not. If they do you can pack it in a pock that protects it, take it down to a fedex hub and ship it out. Just inform them of what it is. You can technically send it UPS but I've had terrible experiences trying to get them to handle firearms. My local Fedex guy thinks they're stupid to turn away the business.
On a side note, I've had work done by CCR a couple times. For the money I think they're the best value out there, and their stuff really holds up.

Yes we are an FFL so it is legal for you to ship to us via UPS or FedEx and we can return it directly back to you

For reference any refinisher that does firearms has to be an FFL by Federal law

I've had work done by both Ruger and Springfield in the last year. Both highly recommended using FedEx as opposed to UPS. Other than the pimply-faced kid dropping his jaw at the fact that a gun was in his store, it was seamless.

Note that you will have to ship it overnight with either UPS or FedEx...which kinda sucks. Make sure you insure it.

If you ship interstate, have to tell the shipper it's a gun; UPS and FedEx apparently were having pilferage problems, and decided tighter tracking from overnight would help, so they each set a company policy to require that.

That link indicates that the overnight policies apply to handguns. That makes sense to me, since I have never shipped a handgun. The two firearms I shipped off to the factory for warranty work over the summer were both long guns.

Long guns can and should be sent USPS imo. They get there faster and cheaper, and you do not need to declare the contents.

Handguns have to be sent UPS or FedEx, overnight (although I have received some with 2nd day air. Either the sender or receiver has to have a FFL according to their rules, it is not a law.

Did you tell them what you were shipping?

I've always been told by FedEx and UPS that it's company policy that guns have to be shipped overnight. I've been told by FedEx that overnight pkgs are held in a more secure area than ground.

This has been my experience...what I've been told by the employees. I've also never had anyone allow me to ship ground once they know what it is. Believe me I've tried.

Now interestingly enough this is only a policy for general customers. Wilson Combat, for example, is allowed to ship two day. I suspect they negotiated this with UPS when they selected them for their shipper.

If you have a different experience than this, please share. God knows I'd love to be able to ship ground if there's a way to do that. But as I said, their answer has always been "no" once I declare it for insurance.

See post #6 above. I did this at two different locations. In both instances, I didn't have packaging sufficient to ship a long gun and I had to pack them right there in the store in front of the employee. As I distinguished above, the link Librarian provided states that overnight shipment is for handguns only. There is no mention of long guns.

Any difference between rostered and non-rostered? The Sig warranty thread raised a concern.
