    Mailing a Rifle to Yourself

According to USPS regulations, it is permissible for a non-FFL to mail a long gun to themselves in another state. Has anyone actually done this? If so, what was your experience?

I ask because I will be traveling back east soon and want to take my rifle. Unfortunately I am flying into Boston Logan and everything I've read says to avoid firearms there. So I thought about mailing it to myself.

    Other thoughts, ideas?

    Thanks
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you.

You can mail it to yourself or in the "care of" another person. You must take possession when you get there.

legal, bring a copy of the law to prove this to the clerk taking the package.

Yes. More than a few times.

My experience was simply taking the weapon to the post office, and mailing it.

I've also used UPS and Fed-Ex. Zero drama. No sweat.

Would make sure you are in compliance with today's rules and regs.

Mail it to yourself "In care of" your destination address. You are the only one who is supposed to open the package after it arrives there.

I went to North Carolina last month to hog hunt with my son. I mailed my rifle in a Plano im3200 case covered in plain brown paper. It cost me $55.00 each way with $1200 insurance. I mailed it to myself in c/o my son at his business address. I returned it to my own address after the hunt. It worked well and was less expensive than UPS. The regulation allows you to mail a hunting rifle (no ammo) to yourself. I don't trust TSA, baggage handlers, or the Postal Service. The key to shipping it via UPSA is to wrap it without any designation identifying it as a gun, but if asked by the postal employee checking it in, tell them it is a hunting rifle for your personal use on a hunting trip.

Thanks for the replies. When I first checked into mailing it to myself, it seemed like this was too easy. But it sounds like it is a feasible way to transport my rifle.

By the way, Jet Blue wants $115 each way for the rifle (it is a second checked bag in my case and exceeds the 64 inch total measurement so it gets hit as "oversized"). Fifty-five bucks USPS sounds great.

                  Thanks again.

I UPS grounded my own rifles to myself while on vacation. Never used the USPS.

It was before 9-11 so I didn't declare what was in the box and UPS didn't really care that much.

I sent a rifle from WI to CA and it was not a problem and the people at USPS were a little unsure. I walked into to building and finished tapping it up while the counter person said it was not legal. I kept working and replied yes it was, so off to get sup. he came back and said the same but was not sure so he checked. The sup came back and asked if it was unloaded and said he learned something new that day. Over all had a fun time and had some laughs. It was cheaper than a check bag.
