    Cali registration

Hi, I have a couple of questions.
When did rifle / shotgun registration become
Mandatory in Cali?? The reason is a friend of
mine recently left me some firearms in his will,
he got these from his father when the father died.

I am sure he never registered them in his name, and
I am not sure if they were registered in the dad's name...

Can I now transfer them to me, or do I give them up
Or break the law with having un-registered firearms?

Registration doesn't start till 1/1/2014... and is not retroactive, meaning all the rifles I already own dont need to be registered and will remain so until I choose to sell them.

So depending on the timeline of your friends inheritance finalization will depend on registration or lack of necessity to..

my friends estate will not be finalized until sometime in 2014. Does that meen I will need to do a DROS for each item when it is finalized? I also need to have them appraised for estate tax purposes..

So what about the AR platform do they need registration if bought this year. Or only if bought in 2014.

The executor of the estate will transfer (PPT) them to you through a CA FFL dealer.

He shouldn't; inheritance to a named beneficiary
a friend of mine recently left me some firearms in his will
is exempt from the FFL. OPLAW form would be the answer, if received in 2014 or later.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

I am very saddened to hear of your loss.

I don't get it? Aren't all firearms registered once DROS'd?

They are different, but that needs a bit more information.

As far as DROS goes, information on buyers and handguns run through dealers is sent to the DOJ, and has been since 1923. Beginning in 2014, similar info will be collected for long guns and their buyers.

Things like 'assault weapons' required a separate and distinct step, different from DROS and the Federal 4473.
