    bore corrosion

is there a way to restore in home conditions a fairly messed up bore of an M44 or is it just cheaper to get a new one and keep the old one's receiver for parts?

i am going to try to take pictures in the morning that might show what exactly it looks like.

right now i am mostly interested in technical or maybe chemical aspects of cleaning something pretty dirty so maybe someone had to restore a bore and could share some technics.

i am sure it has been discussed before, but the search hasn't returned much. so far i've used amonia, tetra gun bore cleaner and a lot of brushing, it looked okay a few days ago but now looks like it's been never cleaned again

It depends on how bad the corrosion is.

Well how is the rifling? As long as it passes the bullet test- stick a cartridge (bullet end) into the end of the barrel- if it swallows the whole bullet- the bore is done. takes half or so your fine. If it has strong rifling, but the deeper lands are pitted you should not have any issues. It wont hurt anything

hm. looks like i might have to check it with someone who knows a bit more than me in person, i guess it's pretty dumb of me to ask these kind of questions without some real evidence.

oh well, it's late, and that's my excuse.

i just checked it again, it doesn't look all too bad, just looks very very very dirty even though i've cleaned it and cleaned it again. will give it a shot again tomorrow.

on the same subject, but a bit different part, the bolt of this same m44 is literally black, is there a way to restore it to nice shiny state again? it doesn't affect performance at all, just looks ugly.

Shoot the rifle and see how it groups, many are pitted or dark and group fine. If you want to polish the bolt, get some metal polish and have at it. Be sure not to take any metal off the bolt face, bolt lug area.

the homemade electrochemical cleaner might be the way for you to go.

tried flitz polish on the bolt, seems to work okay. maybe a braun tooth brush will speed it up a bit

                thanks ya'll

Use "Ed's red" my friend, "Ed's red." Let it sit in the barrel for a day, buy 200 patches, and wahammo cleaner bore.
