    Gun Buyback

Ran the turkey trot this AM in DTSJ and while I was approaching the start line I noticed this along one of the barricades:

First "GBB" in SJ since 2001 according to the mercury news.

$200 for an "assault weapon"? I'm sure they're worth far more than that on the black market.

At Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. They should be more worried about getting child molesters out of the priesthood than getting guns off of the supposed streets.

Great way to drop off a hot gun and get away with murder. It's sickening.

I don't see it say anywhere that it's sponsored by SJPD. Does that mean that I can form a Non-profit Organization and hold private gun buy backs? Something doesn't seem right.

Homicide rates in San Jose have jumped significantly since 2011. Between 2000 and 2010, San Jose averaged 22 homicides per year, with a high of 33 in 2007. Beginning in 2011, homicides have soared, with the city averaging 42 per year. There have been 44 so far in 2013, including one investigated by San Jose State police that SJPD does not count in its total.
Transport unloaded weapons in trunk of car. No walks-ups or ammo.
Sounds like they want you to drive up, stay in your car, and they take the guns out of your trunk. They are trying to short-circuit citizens buying them from the donators.

It disgusts me that PD's are allowed to do this.. even worse that people are dumb enough to participate.

^ That depends on what rifle you turn in. A beat up marlin 60 with a cut down barrel and canted front sight probably would not sell for a $100.

It would if we paint it black and add a shoulder thing that goes up.

I remember hearing about a few that were offering cash and they burned through their found but continued to accept guns in exchange for an IOU. was thinking how entertaining it could be to wait till they ran out of $ and show up with a dozen of the scariest ebr we can own and when offered the IOU tell them "no thanks, I wanted the cash."
I bet they would try and come up with the money or call the cops on you as you left.

They are advertising "Gift Card" not "Cash" - traceability?

Note on the banner picture - it says "gift card" not "cash". Those cards are traceable to various extents. So is the donation truly anonymous?
