Back in 2007 my home was burglarized. Many firearms were stolen including 2 AR's, 2 SKS, Mini 14, Savage 10/22, Glock 19, Beretta 950, Walther P22, Winchester 1300, Taurus 85 .38 etc.
At the time I had a large firearms safe on layaway, so all long guns were kept in a wooden gun cabinet. All of my handguns were kept in a sentry safe that was bolted to my floor in my closet. I also had a sentry fireproof filing cabinet safe.
They were able to rip the safe off the floor, take it off sight, then smash it to get the goodies out of it. The filing cabinet safe had all of my firearms paperwork in it. Since all of my firearms paperwork was in the safe, I didn't have any of the serial #'s for my firearms. The Community Service Officer who arrived on scene was able to pull up all handgun information, but no long gun information. This was the first time I heard of long guns not being registered.
I was renting the home & the home owner supposedly added me to his home owners insurance policy, but it turns out that was not the case. Insurance denied my claim. The home owner was going through some serious medical problems at the time that scrambled his brain pretty bad(aneurysm), so couldn't offer any help. After coming out of his coma he was living with family and being taken care of by them. He has since passed away.
A couple days ago I received a letter from Sacramento PD Evidence & Property Division. They have firearm(s) ready for me to pick up! I couldn't sleep I was so excited.
It turns out my Taurus Model 85 .38 special revolver was recovered back in 2008 & is no longer needed for evidence, so now I can pick it up.
The major hurdle here is that The Department of Justice(DOJ) has to process a Law Enforcement Gun Release Application, & they are claiming 4-12 weeks to process the application! That just sounds absurd to me. Background checks come back in less than an hour in most cases. I had a livescan done to get my CCW and even it was back in less than an hour.
4-12 weeks to do a background check seems like DOJ is performing some sort of scam. Even their web sight states 30 days or less processing time.
I was born and raised in Sacramento which is where I still reside. I have never been arrested and have no criminal record. Currently licensed CCW permit holder.
I have already filled out & mailed the LEGR(11-25-13), sent a copy of the original police report, and a check for $20 just in case. I made copies of everything I sent, & sent via USPS Certified Mail, so that I have confirmation of receipt. They're supposed to receive it today(11-27-13). For some reason it took the USPS several days to ship this letter across town. It was finally delivered 12-2-13.
Update 12-12-13:
I called DOJ BOF just to see how things are progressing. They said they received my application on Dec 2nd, but have not entered it in for processing yet & that they have no idea how long it will take to get entered, or how long it will take once entered.
I sure am glad my hard earned tax dollars afford me such delightful service & efficiency when I need something from my govt. This whole process is ridiculous.

Called DOJ BOF to check on the status again. The guy on the phone was much more helpful than the lady I talked to last time. He said there's only two people that input the applications & legr's come in by the hundreds. He said from what he knows they're back logged about 2 months, so I'm probably looking at mid February. Definitely not the news I wanted to hear, but at least a lot more straight forward than my last conversation.

I received my approval letter from DOJ BOF in the mail yesterday 12-27. I'm happy of course. Just find it odd that when inquiring about it no one had any of the correct info to update me at DOJ.

I went to Sac PD Property today & picked up my revolver. It took about 15 minutes from when I arrived to receive my revolver back. It was really dirty and smelled like a homeless person. It's also missing a few parts, so at this time it's a fancy paper weight. It's missing the yoke screw assembly, & the cylinder stop plunger assembly. I ordered the parts from Taurus already. $15 total & 7-10 day wait for shipping.

Back together, looks like it's been beat up a bit. Definitely not the condition it was in when it was stolen, but once I get the parts it's missing it will be functional 100%. Doesn't look like it was shot much, but likely carried often.
