Is it possible to make more rimfire rounds?

    Dear all,

I was reading an archived thread about evil features and I was thinking, why can't we make special rimfire .223, .308, ... rounds?

I don't reload so maybe there's some big obvious reason I'm missing out on. What if we made special primers / cases / firing pins or something? What would it take to make rimfires out of and use the new rimfire rounds? If we could just make rimfire versions of all the good rounds, we could have all the crazy evil features we wanted right?

All thoughts, ideas, and two cents welcome!
How many programmers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
    None. That's a hardware problem.

How many QA testers does it take to screw in a light bulb?
None. They just report it broken.

it is possible, and it has been done,

The problem is that the case pressures that are developed with rifle loads require the brass to be so thick that the firing pin would not be able to deform them enough to set off the priming compound.

its a neat idea, but it would be very hard to make work without having it be dangerous.

rimfire must be at a fairly low pressure to have the brass thin enough to be crushed yet stand up to firing

i'm not sure how much more powerful a cartridge could be designed over the 22 magnum

its pretty hard to get a new round off the ground without the involvement of handloaders

Waste of time and effort. The R&D required to do something like this is simply not worth doing just to get around a state law. Even if you did make it work, the ammo would be expensive and hard to find. Not to mention the fact that no one else in the world would use it.

...not to mention that this exact same question has been asked many times on this forum by enterprising new members who haven't searched out the issue before starting a thread to discuss it.

            Great for Civil War Reinactors

Just make it compatible with either the 44 Henry Flat rimfire or the 58. Allin/Spiringfield and you'll have a market.

How about offsetting a regular primer to the side?

Does rimfire 'code' specify that the primer cannot be a seperate entity from the casing?

offset primers wouldn't work on a round cartridge (although it could be made to work on a tround)

its a problem of alignment when feeding from a magazine

pinfire rounds (primer on the side) work in revolvers and shotguns, but are incompatible with semi auto guns

I think the big problem is the primer is a primary explosive and is very dangerous to work with.

Large rimfire cartridges were common in the past. The Swiss even issued one for their main infantry rifle in the 19th century.

While were on the topic, does anyone make .22 mag kits for AR's, AK's, MP5's, etc?

Would be nice to have a fully functional replica with a little more kick than a .22 LR.

My brother gave me a Waffenfabrik M81 Vetterli.

I found this website about them:

Does anyone have any comments about this rimfire Swiss rifle?

                            Thanks
