Shooting Ranges In Public Schools

Think shooting ranges in public schools are a thing of the past? Guess again.

I was looking over the blue prints for a new high school that's out for bid right now, Douglas High School in Minden, NV, and there it was, not that I was looking for it specifically, but a ten-lane 50-meter indoor shooting range is in the specs and on the drawing, along with a dedicated ventilation system and a secured room with a large gun safe.

Just thought it would be something CalGunners would like to know about...

Air guns, yes. Firearms, no. The cost for a real shooting range is too high for any new construction. An air gun range is much much simpler and less costly.

I have shot on many High School ranges but they are dying off at a rapid pace.

You could be right on that, my only question is why would they need a 50-meter range if it's just for air-rifle? Specs. didn't list a backdrop/bullet catch of any kind, the backdrop is probably NIC (Not In Contract) and the district will contact with a supplier/installer on their own once the building is complete and turned over to them, but it clearly lists the area as "Shooting Range."

If it was in a basement or underground they would need airflow...

Just sweeping up in an enclosed space will kick up alot of dust and stuff that you don't want to breathe.

Its not differnt than a woodshop or ceramic studio they all should have very expensive ventilation systems if they aren't open air.

Even if they are using air guns they're probably using lead pellets. Those BBs will shoot someone's eye out.

A huge thumbs up to that school district. Though I think the motivation might be less Pro2A and more US Army Jr ROTC money.

I could be wrong. Perhaps they got some special funding for a real range but it's very rare to install a firearms range today.

The hs I attended built in the 30s had a gun range in the basement .
The replacement hs opened 62 eliminated the gun range but added a pool.

I have no knowledge if this actual document produced by us state dept and signed by JFK influenced the design of any schools . It does give insight into some thought processes that have not and do not get discussed.
