I recently noticed on my Smith & Wesson M&P Shield 9mm that loading the magazine has gotten a lot more difficult. The plunger just doesn't seem to move as smoothly anymore, and it takes a lot more force to top off a mag. I haven't noticed an increase in miss-fires though.
Today while cleaning my gun, I took apart the magazines and sure enough, there was a ton of gunk inside the magazine, I cleaned them out really well, and everything seems to be moving a lot smoother now. I used some CLP on the inside, and scrubbed the crud out, then wiped it completely dry of lubricant, so there was no CLP remaining. Am I correct in my assumption that CLP inside your mags is a very bad thing to have? I am sure it would help with the stickiness of the mags, but I am afraid that the lubricant will somehow have the possibility of causing miss-fires if it makes contact with the rounds.
Also, what is the best way to care for your magazine springs? Should I leave all my magazines completely topped off and loaded, leaving my springs depressed at all times? Or should I have the magazines left empty in order to keep them from being stressed at all times? I have enough magazines where I could potentially "cycle" through them, and have fully loaded mags and empty ones at the same time in order to preserve the springs. What is the general consensus on this?
