I went out to the dessert and shot my buddy's Glock 29. I had heard that 10mm kicks really hard, but I found that his Kahr K9 in .40 kicked harder than the Glock. We were shooting steel plates at about 10-15 yards, and man was I shocked. That 10mm was spinning those plates around dramatically. I had heard that it hits hard but I had never witnessed it. This got me really interested in it. What are your guys' experience with it, and what guns do you have that shoot it. It seems that it's about $5-$10 more per box than 45ACP. I have read that 10mm is great for hunting, but I'm not really a hunter. What do you guys think?

I have tried a few 10mm loadings, some of them are not that hot. Buy good 10mm ammo if you want a 10mm or load your own, otherwise you just bought an overrated 40.ExtremeXComment

^^^ what they all said. I have no practical purpose for a 10mm... But I like to think it's my "SHTF and **** needs to drop when I shoot at it" gun. Obviously it isn't the a one stop shop because it's 10mm but it's better than most others and having 15 rounds of 10mm in one mag is hard to beat.
Roll your own IMO. I can load defensive rounds for about $.25/round and that is mostly because of cost of Speer bullets and starline brass. If I wanted to load cheap target stuff that is still hot, I could load for about the same cost as .40.
Glock 20/29 can also shoot .40 ammo with NO modifications. I even fired numerous lead rounds and there was no build up or anything.
OceanBob will probably be in at some point as well with a couple pix of his glocks or mag tech 10mm rifle.
If you have the money, I would go for itComment

But the .40 was designed after the 10mm. The .40 is just a shrunken down 10mm round. I guess there aren't too many fans of the round.

Most relatively inexpensive 10mm ammo are loaded to the same as .40S&W. They will often be rated something like 1050fps. I carry a Glock 29, extended/ported barrel when backpacking with 200gr hard cast double tap. I like the firearm, but with the hotter stuff often my less experienced friends have trouble properly shooting the gun without jamming it (limp wristing?) no matter how hard I try to help. Its always 100% for me though.

I really enjoy shooting my Kimber Stainless Target. It feeds on Underwood Ammo and you will definitely notice the kick versus lower powered 10mm ammo (~1050 fps).DavidComment

I've got a Colt Delta Elite that I carry in the woods for bear.
Recoil isn't bad as the 1911 is heavy.

Not a great round for self defense. You want low recoil, good expansion, low or no muzzle flash.
The 10mm tests I've seen don't do any better than the 40 cal hst in gel.just happy to be here. I like talking about better ways to protect ourselves.

This is an excellent summary of the 10mm as a defensive round.
Think of the 10mm as being a "Magnum" version of the .40.
The 10mm came first and the .40 was simply a downrated version of the 10mm that became popular as folks realized that it was a better balance of ballistics and manageability. A powerful round doesn't do you a whole lot of good if you can't reliably and quickly deliver that round to the target.
One caution on shooting the 10mm round from a 1911 platform. Many shooters have experienced cracked frames. There's a lot of debate about the causes. If you build a man a fire, you'll keep him warm for the evening. If you set a man on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life.Comment

I think you missed my point...
I am calling the 10mm an overrated 40 when its loaded to a similar FPS... which is exactly what it is.
If you are not going to be shooting good hot 10mm ammo you were probably better off getting a 40 in the first place.ExtremeXComment
