This weekend I will be doing a PPT trade at a LGS here in SoCal. I have only ever bought new. I've called the LGS and know of the legal requirements, but I was hoping some of you who may have done a trade like this would have some tips for a newbie as to how to handle this so all parties (including the LGS) end up happy. What are your suggestions? Do we show the guns in the parking lot and only enter the LGS when were ready to continue? Do we do everything inside?

Handle the cash transaction outside of the LGS. If both you and the seller feel comfortable checking the gun outside go for it but be discrete. If not take it inside the store and check it out.Ray

For security reasons, I always do the initial inspecting inside the gun store. From there, you can ask the owner questions galore as you clear and inspect the weapon. Ask them if you can take it apart and further see the internal workings of the gun. I personally bring a snap cap and permanent marker. This is to test whether or not the firing pin will actually strike the primer as well as feeding, chambering, and ejecting, because more times then not you won't have the opportunity to fire it before purchasing.
Another thing I ensure to do is make sure that funds change hands before filling out paper work. I haven't heard of it happening here on the forum but I personally want to avoid the situation of someone trying to screw me all together.

Those are great tips. The actual transaction will be a trade of his Handgun for my handgun. What happens if one of us doesn't pass the background check? (I won't have a problem but who knows with the other party). If he doesn't pass a check for some reason and the trade doesn't work out will we have to pay another PPT and DROS to get his gun back to him? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I've never been through this before.Comment

I've always wondered the same thing but never really cared to ask. I always knew I would clear the background and if the other party did not, I would offer them another chance to do the PPT(they cover the fee of course). If they didn't pass again I guess they'd be SOL and I get my pistol backThose are great tips. The actual transaction will be a trade of his Handgun for my handgun.
