"Two Sonoma County deputies saw the boy walking with the replica weapon around 3 p.m. Tuesday in Santa Rosa. Lt. Dennis O'Leary says they repeatedly ordered him to drop what appeared to be a rifle before firing several rounds."

Repeatedly means just twice, probably 3 seconds apart right before the fired.

Shoot first ask questions later - how many cops were shot last year and killed in the line of duty? Oh that's right 2 in the state of CA for 2012 - obviously a clear and present danger.

They shot him at 3pm - far from dark.

After telling Lopez to move away from the rifle, deputies approached the unresponsive teen as he lay on the ground and handcuffed him before administering first aid and calling for medical assistance,

They handcuffed him because they IMMEDIATELY couldn't determine the guns were made of plastic?

Two things come to mind a language barrier or mental inability to understand.

The harvest is in full swing and english is not spoken by many of the migrant farm workers. This is a school day was the boy in school?

I wasn't there but I feel very sorry for the family loosing the boy. Kids still play with toy guns in Mexico.

This is a sad story all around I hope the officers used every possible means to conclude this matter before firing their gun.

Sad thing that someone this young has lost their life.
This kind of thing goes back to good parenting.
I would never have allowed my kids to run the streets with their toy or replica guns.
My wife and I had a very firm policy that toy guns did not leave the house or the back yard, Period, ever.
Parents need to educate their children that things like this incident can happen to them.
The public in general and the LEOS in particular are a bit gun shy and there seems to be a shoot first and ask questions later mentality going on right now as younger and younger people are perpetrating crimes involving guns in our community.
