    Legally Owning A Handgun

I bought a handgun back in '93 from a co-worker. The transaction was done through a notary. It was my first gun so wasn't sure how guns were bought and sold. I still have the gun but can't find the paperwork or if it's even valid if I do find it. What do I need to do to legally own this gun? I tried searching but didn't find anything similar to my situation. Gun is a Smith & Wesson 622. Any help or suggestions are much appreciated.

Since 1991 transfers like the one you describe have had to go through an FFL in California. So the transfer in 1993 was illegal. But the statute of limitations has long ago expired on that crime, so you don't have to worry about anything. The handgun is legally yours and legally unregistered. If for some reason you want it to be registered in your name you can send in the Voluntary Registration form to CalDOJ, but it's not required.
