Wayne LaPierre, Vice President of the NRA was on Hardball tonight, was flipping channels and happened to catch it. He basically discussed the NRA's next move and I must say I was very encouraged. It sounds like they will be moving aggressively, this got my hopes up that they will be coming after every AW ban and CCW in the near future. I can only hope that we see results in the next few years.
Here is a link direct to the whole segment, LaPierre comes in around 3 minutes in, but if that doesn't work try going here and just clicking on "SCOTUS strikes down gun ban".
I pulled out some quotes:
LaPierre- "What this means is individuals all over the country have to have equal access to this. You can't say, 'hey inidivduals in america have the right but it doesn't apply to you,' so we're gonna make sure, step by step, that every American citizen has equal access."
Obviously this applies to us, we do not currently have equal access and we have a new weapon (or rather, an old weapon which has been repaired) with which to assert our rights. He is asked what the next move is and of course they are starting with other similar laws in Chicago and other Illinois cities and San Francisco. Then Chris Matthews (the host) asks him about where should the line be drawn, and on what types of weapons does today's ruling apply.
Matthews- "What's your position as the NRA, about the right to bear arms, what is the limit on it?"
LaPierre- "Traditional type firearms, an american public has always- rifles, shotguns, handguns those are what was covered under this decision today."
Paul Helmke- ".50 caliber sniper rifles?"
LaPierre- "all .50 caliber is, is another caliber, there's no difference-"
Matthews- "semi-automatics?"
LaPierre- "semi-automatics are quintessential firearms just like handguns owned by citizens all over this country."
...
Matthews- "You get so fiery about this, you won today!"
LaPierre- "They're still gonna try to put all kinds of restrictions in the place of the honest citizen and we'ere gonna fight this at the federal state and local level"
Next they go on to talk about CCWs and Helmke simply admits that due to this ruling using handguns in you home for self defense is legal, and that CCWs are legal when all the rules and the proper process is followed. But then he says we need to put more obstacles in place to make sure the wrong people don't get guns or CCWs. As if a criminal were ever responsible enough to get a CCW.
Anyway, you can watch the rest. We have heard plenty of rhetoric before, from the NRA and supposedly pro gun politicians, and after all of it we still get completely ***king screwed. For some reason it just feels different to me this time. After reading the initial findings I wasn't very encouraged. The more I read, the more I listen to the reactions on both sides, the more optimistic and excited I get, I don't really know why though. I have to do something with that excitement; tomorrow I'm going to buy a couple more lowers.
