We've been stopped by the rangers before when shooting in BLM.... in Las Vegas (not CA). And they're no joke there, coming at us with AR's drawn on us.

My story goes was that they came down fast in their Ford Ranger (heh) pickup, got on their loud speaker and ordered us to walk away from our vehicles and come towards them and fan out into a line with each person spaced apart by an arm's length. After we did that, they came out with their AR's drawn and pointed at us. One guy went down the line frisking everyone and asking if they had any weapons on them, while the partner watches from one end with his AR in the low-ready pointing towards us. My arms were sore & tired from holding them up for so long

Bottom line was that we were on BLM area where lots of people shoot, but it was still considered "within the loop" of Las Vegas and that we would need to go further out. They were cool and eventually let us go with warnings after checking all of our ID's (I was the only one with a CA DL, and also an AZ CCW permit which was still valid in NV at the time), and only gave $30 parking tickets to those who drove out there.
