    Target shooting versus Precision shooting

Is there really a difference between the shooting styles???

To my understanding, the following is true :

    1) Both practices work to put a bullet exactly where the shooter wants.
    2) Both practices fine tune the shooters skills in the fundamentals.
    3) Both practices use "trial and error" with parts, loads, etc.

If all 3 statements are true, then what is different between the shooting styles???

I'm asking because I'm reloading .308cal for precision shooting with my Remington SPS and some of the powders recommended in the Lyman 49th ED describe many of said powders as "target" powders, with few to none of them being describes as "precision" powders.

Am I thinking about this too much, thus missing something???

I thought about that, but the question seemed more general.

      Thanks, though.

IMHO, precision shooting is shooting out to distance with the intent of getting the smallest groups possible. Target loads are just for general shooting

As far as I have been told, accuracy is the consistent POI on the target and not exactly in the proverbial X ring. Whereas precision shooting is putting the bullet exactly where you want it on the target near every time.

Hitting a target (of whatever size) vs working to get those hits in a small an area as possible?
Seems like a real, but minor difference.

It depends on what your definitions are. I'll assume target shooting refers to conventional NRA bullseye shooting and precision shooting refers to tactical training shooting at silhouettes. The differences are the targets, distances and positions. At the shorter distances the targets in conventional shooting are very small compared to a silhouette target. Tactical shooting is about shooting in all kinds of unorthodox positions and unknown distances, where conventional shooting is in one of the 4 normal positions and known distances.
As far as equipment and loads are concerned, each sport has it's own particular requirements.

Precision shooters have matching gear, rifle, and clothing...all camo.

                    To me:
Precision = 5 shots in one ragged hole.
Target = 5 shots in the bullseye.

                      To me...

"Precision" = Same as "Sniper", but now that's a bad word.

So, since this is California, "Sniper" has been replaced by "Precision"

Target = Either the individual receiving the bullets (see above), or a piece of paper.

It was not a threat. It was an exaggerated response to an uncompromising stance. I was taught never to make a threat unless you are prepared to carry it out and I am not a fan of carrying anything. Even watching other people carrying things makes me uncomfortable. Mainly because of the possibility they may ask me to help.
