Just curious on how many pistol mags are standard issue with the M9A1 and the 1911. Tried a Google Search and couldn't find much.

Military pistol magazine loadout

We had three for an M9. One in the gun, two on the belt.
I was in the USCG, and that was for boardings or guard duty. They switched to Sig .40's I don't know how they roll now, but I bet its still the same.Comment

I was also under the impression than a lot of folks except some MOS's or rating would never even handle a pistol.
The USCG isn't a 'combat service' at its core, so it was all pistol no rifle. We had M16A2's but I only saw them used in the field once or twice.
I spent all kinds of time screwing around with those old M9's. I've always meant to buy one, never got around to it.Comment

95% of the time ammo loadouts depend on where you are.
There are basic/standard loadouts but ammo loadouts are tailored to the mission you are doing. Keep in mind currently only SOF units have 1911s so standard isn't a word that holds much weight with them.Comment

In the Marines, my19111911A1 (fixed it as I am not as old as that made me sound LOL) came with 3 mags as did my M9 later. But that was only enforced for inspections. Nothing prevented me from carrying any other mags I could lay my hands on as well when in a combat zone.Last edited by Steve_In_29; 10-13-2013, 1:55 PM.Comment

I can't comment on the 1911 but the 1911A1 that I was issued at various duty stations had one magazine plus a two cell web magazine pouch for the pistol belt for the two spare magazines. You also got a black leather holster and lanyard that was guaranteed to get caught on everything in sight.Comment

During my term of Naval service, whenever I was issued a 1911A1, it came with three magazines, each loaded with 5 rounds.
Later, in my shore duty assignment to the Alameda Naval Air Station Police, I carried a S&W Model 10 also loaded with 5 rounds (at least I got to carry two full speedloaders... 2 more rounds, woohoo!). Coincidence?
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!Comment

In the late 70's & early 80s, if you had a pistol card you could have all the magazines you wanted. Often times wearing pistol holsters and pouches, compass case, binos & camera drew sniper fire to those openly packing such gear. I never did figure-out how to hide a Ithica 37.Comment
