Shipping a Rifle to an FFL

I'm assuming this is kind of a noob question, but how does one go about shipping a rifle to an ffl for a ppt? Please move if 2A is not the right forum.

probably the wrong forum, but call a local gun store or even some pawn shops(anyone w/ an FFL) that does FFL transfers. you can only ship from 1 FFL to another. not like you can box it up and UPS it directly to one. There's a fee per firearm. can be as much as $75 or low as $35-$40 depending. Also, by ppt are you talking about a power point file?

PPT - Private Party Transfer, a special California only thing where 2 participants with CA identification use the SAME CA FFL to facilitate a transfer.

Shipping doesn't work; that makes it a dealer-sale and the fee-limit for PPT does not apply. Usually this is an issue for off-Roster handguns; PPT sales are exempt from the Roster, while dealer-sales are not. That isn't a problem for a rifle.

Call the receiving FFL to see if s/he will receive from a private individual. It is legal to ship person-to-FFL, but some have a business practice not to accept those, preferring FFL-to-FFL. Long guns can go US Mail or UPS/FedEx.

(In other states, 'PPT' can mean 'FTF' - Face To Face, no FFL required; that is generally illegal in CA.)

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

You probably should have sat this one out.

Thank you for the help. You answered my main question of whether or not a private party could ship to an ffl or if it should be ffl to ffl.

JMHO, if your FFL will not accept a rifle from a private party, you need a new FFL. The laws in California are restrictive enough without FFL's imposing additional requirements.

Not correct. Except for C&R long guns shipped within California, all firearms must be shipped to an FFL. In January the C&R exception goes away. It is up to the receiving FFL whether he will accept a shipment from a non-FFL. Individual FFLs set their own rates for shipping/receiving firearms.
