    Shooting with Both Eyes Open

    Hello All,

I recently suffered a stroke. While most of my function has come back, I am still unable to wink my left eye independently. As such, I would have to aim with both eyes open. Turns out, I'm horrible at it. Especially with my AK variants which we all know isn't the greatest sight system to begin with.

Lately, I've been putting masking tape over the left lens of my shooting glasses. But, this greatly inhibits my depth perception.

I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions on how to remedy this or on how to get acclimated to shooting with both eyes open faster.

    Thanks,
    Jay

Practice my friend, the more you shoot, the better it gets. I shoot with both eyes open because almost all my weapons some form of optics that require both eyes to be open OR im shooting skeet. However, it took awhile for me to become comfortable with it

Sorry to hear that. Try shooting left handed to see if that helps. I know that will be awkward to. I can shoot both eyes open left handed but not right handed.

The tape trick over the non dominant eye is a good way to start. I prefer scotch tape over masking tape. Once you get used to that, take the tape out and start dry firing both eyes open.
Takes a little time but you get better at it.

i think it might be easier with a red dot sight. or you could tape a black piece of paper or something to your shooting glasses

I've been told to train shooting with both eyes open, and shooting off handed by the seasoned shooters I call my friends. I have been practicing dry firing both eyes open since. I find its more difficult with my off eye, especially with rifles. It's a bit more difficult to acquire the front sight, both eyes open, using off eye, using a handgun, but once acquired I can hold it well. With rifles both eyes open, off eye, it's hard to acquire and maintain the front sight as my
Dominant eye prevails and i usually end up closing it.

I've been there fortunately my vision came back. You pose an interesting question and it stimulates the imagination on how to overcome some personal issues. The ole Scotch tape over the non-shooting eye is the common solution. Which got me to thinking. Perhaps you could get a pair of plastic safety glasses and just fog a light coat of dull coat model clear paint spray on them. I don't think you'll solve the depth perception issue but it's worth a try.
Another solution might be a pair of shooting glasses with the weak eye just slightly out of focus. Your optometrist might have some ideas.

You should be shooting both eyes open anyways. It will take a little getting used to if you have shot one eye your entire life, but it will come. Sorry to hear about the stroke.

I've always shot with both eyes open; it just works well for me. If you can see well out of your left eye you might try using it and closing your right eye. It takes a bit of neck stretching, but I know a lot of right-handed people who have a strong left eye.

May be that you are left eye dominate. Common problem. Many people use a patch or tape like others have posted. Also a red dot should help. Perhaps a google or Calguns search for left eye dominate shooting might give you some ideas.

It saw someone wear this at the range today, I think it'll help you:

You can also get one that attaches to the rifle:

Practice will make this second nature to you. I was trained to shoot with both eyes open from the first time I shot a gun. I shoot like crap if I close one eye.
