Please Help Identify This Gun!!!

A friend of mine dropped a couple guns off for me to clean and one of them is pretty interesting. It has some German markings on it and is only labeled "Mod. 98" along with some German eagle/Nazi stamp marks. The serial numbers do not match from the receiver and the magazine plate.

I'm guessing its some sort of mauser but I don't know what caliber. Ignore the scope as it obviously unoriginal. Any help would be great!!

looks like a sporterized K98 (8mm Mauser)

Sporterized for sure... I'll go with a Mauser...

It's a K98 that would be worth quite a large chunk of money were it not sporterized

That rifle went through an SS depot for repair/rework at some point.

Original caliber would've been 8mm mauser (7.92x57) but since it's been sporterized it's possible it's a different caliber now.
