If one were to test a ceremic level IV "in conjunction with" plate, without the required IIIA soft backing armor, what would it be able to stop?
Most of the (badly done) testing I've seen on youtube is against rifle rounds, where chunks of the plate fly back with great force into what would be the chest unless the soft armor is used.
It does appear to be mostly useless aginst rifle rounds unless used as intended...
On the other hand, I would guess it would stop a .22 fired out of a pistol as the energy is much much less then a centerfire rifle round like a .308. What about a centirefire pistol round like a 9mm?
I have not seen any testing done with pistol rounds though, so would a plate without it's backing armor be at all useful here?
Has testing been done to determine where the line of minimum safety lies without the soft armor underneath?
As a disclaimer, I'm interested in this from a "how good is our technology" standpoint. If I were to use plates that require soft armor, I would use the soft armor as it was designed.
I do not intend to buy armor to test it in this manner, nor am I intended in doing anything that starts with "hold my beer and watch this...".
