    Advice Needed

My father recently passed away and had a collection of arms. We have decided to send them to Rock Island auction. Before we send them off can we get a list of arms that are registered in CA to his name. We do not want the DOJ coming back after the arms are sold with a list of arms that we did not know about. my dad bought sold and traded all his life. Is there a way to get a list registered to him? Can we request it or do we need a lawyer? Can we send DOJ a copy of his death certificate and request. Any help would be appreciated , especially by anyone who has has gone thru this. I also apologize if thisd is not where to ask for this type of assistance. I am new to the forum and not sure how to navigate it properly yet. Thank You

First off sorry for your loss.
It is probably best to have an attorney do it. There is a form available on DOJ's web site but it states that you can not get information on another person. Also keep in mind that the only things that will turn up are registered assault weapons, and handguns, rifle's and shotguns may not appear on any list that doj has. Use caution with some of the auction houses, and know beforehand what you are getting into. Have everything looked at by someone independent of the auction house to give you a fair idea what each item may be worth. You may be better off selling them yourself than having it done by an auction house, where you don't have to pay them fee's to sell your items. There are plenty of collectors and shooters locally that will give you fair prices probably above what you will receive from any auction house. I helped a friend of my daughters out with a similar situation a few years back, with some collectible arms as well as plain Jane shooters, each and everyone she sold she received more than a auction house offered her. I don't believe it was Rock Island though.

I don't think there is any value in getting a list of registered guns. I don't know how old your Dad was but if he's my age or older we could buy and sell guns for many years without registration. You do not have to register guns to have them in your possession in many cases.
How many guns are we talking about? If it's a lot of guns and the family doesn't want to sell guns individually, one by one, it might be best to get a few opinions on what the collection is worth. If the auction house wants to sell the guns, let them arrange the shipping.
I have a collection but my wife will sell my guns one at a time when I die. That's the best way to get maximum dollars but it's more work. But the key thing is how many items are we talking about?
