UTAS - A BIG FAIL on the UTS15

I bought a UTS-15 about 2 months ago from Atlantic Firearms. The gun is a variation of the KSG bullpup shotgun. Originally the gun had some issues when reviewed.

The new version still has issues, and mine never operated properly, even when I sent it back twice for repairs. In fact, the first time it came back the operation was worse.

The gun will NOT fire if any back pressure is on the foregrip. I am not sure how UTAS and AF expect you to get the buttstock firmly agaisnt your shoulder with this design.

The worst part of this whole fiasco is the hammer will drop with the bolt out of battery, which could lead to a shell going off next to your face.

There are others buyers with similar issues with this gun, and yet UTAS is still selling it on the market place.

I did get a refund for the gun, but not the fees and sales tax the FFL collected when the gun was shipped it.

This gun is not an "option" to the KSG. Its a non working shotgun with real capabilities to blow your face off.

    Buyer beware.

You pull a shotgun or rifle into your shoulder with the pistol grip hand, not the forend. Poor design none the less but you don't use the forend to pull the gun into your shoulder.

I don't know what the NRA looks at to rate someone a master , but you can't get a high rate of fire with a pump if you're using the forearm to pull the shotgun into your shoulder. If the NRA just looks at targets, then ROF doesn't really factor, does it?

Heck, my Winchester 1897 unlocks with a forward movement of the pump - Browning figured that the recoil of the shotgun would overcome the inertia of the pump, ensuring that the bolt was locked forward until pressure had dropped.

I agree, your gun isn't right. I was just pointing out, to pull the gun into your shoulder with the grip hand, the gun isn't working right and that needs to be fixed. I wasn't doubting your credibility, the gun is defective. Just a shooting tip, no charge. On another note, I'm sure your pals were experienced shooters but usually shotgunners are rated by letter grade, AAA is the highest in trap and skeet. Although there is a Master class in Sporting clays but no expert classification. FYI. We were talking shotguns after all.

See my previous post. Expert and Master are NRA classifications used in rifle and pistol shooting mainly.

Folks have differing opinions of Nutnfancy. I enjoy watching a lot of his gun reviews.

He really had issues with the UTAS-15 he attempted to review around the end of 2012, ending up with a "Not Recommended" finding. I think this is the first time I have seen this from him. Don't recall whether he had the same issues as the OP, but to quote Nutn: "The gun sucks."

Why buy a UTAS when you can have an SRM arms 1216 ?

Russ69, I understand what you are saying. I don't pull back the foregrip on my O/u's but I am not a shotgun expert either. I do know in an emergency I wouldn't want to have to think so hard to get a gun to fire.

I will say this, if the gun had fired I would have kept it. I don't think its a total piece of junk. I think it has some very nice freatures. We didn't have one misfeed...not one single issue. With iron sights the gun did well at trap too, alghouthg I prefer my Athena for that sport. The recoil was somewhat heavier than an O/U but if we had loaded up the full 15 rounds I don't think recoil would be very heavy.

All in all I wanted to really keep the gun. I am just upset I am out $175.00 in fees and back on the streets to buy a hi capacity pump once again. If they could get the trigger issue fixed I would buy a UTAS, but thier credibility along with Atlantic's is shot. they have to know the gun has issues, others here on Calguns have posted similar issues since I bought mine...I just wished they had posted the problems before I paid out FFL fees and sales Tax.

The lesson for me is simple, buy guns locally, unless they are proven, and even than wait for a model to be thoroughly tested before you drop $1,100.00 on it.

I have a trap/sporting clays gun, a skeet gun and an 870 that works for everything. That pretty much covers shotguns. If you do it again, buy the best gun you can afford. Maybe even strech the budget a bit. They last a lifetime and you only need to buy it once.
A poorly functioning gun is a total disappointment.

I was interested in purchasing the UTS-15 when it first came out but after watching this vid by nutnfancy last year changed my mind. I laughed pretty hard when I watched it.

How on earth did the shell managed to do a 180 degree flip inside the gun? Referring to the Nutnfancy video Riddler posted.

Yeah, but it looks cool and is fun. Are you a ninja that needs 100% reliability for life and death situations? Buy an 870......

I saw one in Reed's Indoor Range this week, quick, someone go buy it and let us know.

I didn't realize what that thing is until I saw the video in this thread.
