Gilmay Guns in Fresno is closing down business.

I just received word today that this shop is closing its doors permanently at the end of this month. I thought I would just help get the word out there for anyone living in the Fresno area that frequents this shop.

I personally have enjoyed going to their shop and talking to Bob their main gunsmith. Although wait times are usually pretty long, I always have enjoyed the service he has provided on my guns.

I've been going there since 2005 before they were at their current location, when they were still on Ashlan st!

There are many on these forums who would never go there again, and I admit I think their prices are a little high at times (thats probably why they are closing down), but I'll be damned if I didn't say they were nicer than Herb Bauer. If you work at Herb Bauer, sorry but I get bad vibes going in there.

Everything in their store is 10% off, so if you had been eyeballing something there now is the time to get it.

    Bye Gilmay! I'll be missed!

After that im surprised you keep going there. There attitude was less then steller. With prices as bad as herb bauers, and 3-6m for gun smith work. I tend to stay FAR away from there. When you piss people off, they spend there money elsewhere. Simple, gun shops need to be service driven to keep customer. Most people dont understand this, and make excuse for them. If they had decent prices, good services within a reasonable amount of time, they would BE FRESNO's premier gun shop.

They charge $65 for a transfer, I bought my first gun from their old store years ago but when I saw that they will gouge on transfer fees I refused to step foot in there again. There is a new gun store opening down the street from gilmay in the old napa building so Ill see how that one turns out since it's close to me as well

Capitalism. Gouge people and you will be gone. I am shocked that Canyon Sports in Martinez is still there considering their pricing, customer service and attitude.

Eh. Good riddance. I went once. That's all I have to say about that. There is still a lot of open territory out in Madera and Fresno. There still isn't a real, "go to" shop in the area. The 2 cities are growing together and there is an aquarium being built off the 99 on the county line so you know they're planning for another growth spurt. Someone needs to take advantage of this and open up a shop that can take advantage of both counties. Lots of shooters out there waiting for their new favorite shop.

I, too, hate Herb Bauer, but I like that the used guns are on racks that you can reach. I hate when I'm cruising the used gun section and I want to check out 10-15 different guns that are behind a counter. I like to browse at my own discretion, I just wish that place didn't always feel so tense. Every time someone walks in the employees get nervous.

I'm hoping these guys will be the go to store. I'm told they do very good work.
They should be open in a few days, they had some issues with PG&E

Edit I stand corrected B&M not becoming Full Spectrum. Full Spectrum is a new company.

To be fair, a 3 to 6 month wait for a good gunsmith, isn't unreasonable. The best in the business are busy. The longest I've had to wait is 1-1/2 years. Some of the best gunsmiths have a 3 year wait.

B&M Gun works will be a awesome store there were very customer oriented in Madera, I been to the Madera Store several times and they were the best. Only leaves on gun store in Madera Zak's Guns they don't have much in stock but can order and have gun prices.

Gillman and Mayfield and whatever they finally changed there name to had no customer service. You walked in and it was hard to find somebody to help you, then enless you were a regular and knew Bob and Bill you never really did get a good deal.

Not only were the private party transfer price raised to $65 but it would take close to a hour to complete everything even if there was nobody in the store. It will be good to see them gone.

Only nice thing about Herb Bauer is they had anything in stock so you could go pre view and then order on the internet or from other cheaper stores around the valley.

went there for some minor work. took two weeks and when I went to pick up the gun it wasnt complete. told me to come back in 15 minutes and it would be ready. came back, took the gun home, and found they still hadn't done all I asked...they told me I could bring the gun back and they'd do what they could to make things right, but I opted to just do the work myself.

What a bunch of bull**** here about Gilmay Firearms, best customer service in the valley, Bob and Bill are top notch,
all gunsmiths are lagged right now, their prices are better than most in the valley,
they always back up their work, there has been many a time when Bob should have charged me a fee or more than he did and gave me a break, with this kind of complaining its a wonder ANY shop stays open, if they're closing its most likely because they have had their fill of California and may be relocating-
Bob, Bill, Sharon, staff-thanks for the great service and you will be missed!

My family were long time custumers at gilman and Mayfield. But have not bought anything since there screwed me around back in 2008 and none of my family has been back.
I order a gun that supposedly had a 12 month wait time . Paid in full and waited almost a year because I really wanted the gun. When I went back after a year to start dros they did not have the gun and never ordered it. Had to wait another month.
I felt screwed and have not been back. After this happened I found out it was only a 3 to 4 month wait time for the gun.
I run a business and I know if I did that to my customer's I would not have repeat customer.
That being said I liked talking to bob. He really knows alot about guns. But there customer service went bad really fast.
Now Prkarms get all my business.

You must have brought a lot of guns from them, if you were a regular you were fine to deal with them as they really gave you good customer service. Even dating back to them being on Shields if you were just somebody that maybe brought 1 gun a year or so they didn't give you very good customer service.

If you think the prices at Gillman and Mayfield were some of the best in the valley then apparently you didn't go into the store when it moved to Shaw Avenue. They had little selection, and were not much cheaper than Herb Bauer.

They also charged outrages fees for private party transfer $65 which is crazy. I guess they didn't want regular business.

I don't think anybody is too happy with the markup at most local gunshops, though that's not always the fault of the small business,
                            I always found a good deal on a firearm from time to time, they had a great guarantee on pistols for instance, if not happy you could trade it in for another;
I've had a lot of gunsmithing there over the years and while I had an occaisional issue they always took care of it reasonably quickly,
they were always happy to talk shop about projects, loads etc.,
                            they have my appreciation

They were the only place I bought guns. I bought ammo mags scope. Had them mount scopes Even thought it took almost 3 months. I remember my dad taking me to the one on shields when I was a kid. Bob was a really nice guy to talk too. They even knew my dad by name.
I knew there prices were high but is was just the place we bought guns. But after one experience we never went back to buy guns.

I have been to There new shop once. Just to see What they had but didnt buy anything. And never will.

I'm not the only one that feels like this either. Or else they would still be in business.
I wish bob The best. Hes is a real nice guy.
