Rx shooting glasses

Hey all,

I'm looking into getting some prescription shooting glasses.

I main shoot indoor pistol, but on occasion I do go to outdoor ranges for long-range rifle plinking.

I'm looking into Rudy Project, Wiley X, Smith Optics, and Oakley. Unfortunately, there are very few, if any, distributors in my area who carry the models I want to look into, so I might be buying blind.

I think Rudy Project and some Oakleys have very desirable qualities, but they are almost twice as much as prescription Smith and Wiley glasses. Is the price difference worth it?

Also, I've been looking into getting rose colored lenses for all-around use, and was curious to hear what everyone's experience with lens colors in different lighting conditions has been.

I have rudy project rx glasses with photochromic lenses and am happy with them. They were pricey even with ins., but they're worth it.

get some walmart safety glasses and order the yellow tint

I have wiley x glasses, with a rx insert, to correct an astigmatism in one eye. While I do see a benefit, I have noticed that they wind up being too close to my eyes, and that bugs me more than the astigmatism.

Check the eye relief with them, before you make any decisions.

Unfortunately, there aren't many places to try out the models I want. I did find a site called ADS eyewear that will send out the frames before they cut the prescription lenses, to let you try out the fit of the frame. Apparently you can send them back for 100% credit if they don't jive with you. I've considered giving that a try in mean time.

@geeknow That's why I'm trying to find a pair of direct in frame rx glasses. Rudy Project and Oakley are the only ones I can find, and both run 600+ for the convenience.

@bohoki I'm hoping to find frames where I can switch out the lenses and use them as my general sun glasses, if possible.

I had the oakley RX glasses, and always found them to be Way to far from my eye. Charging handle on the m4 would scratch the crap out of them. Hope that helps.

I'm leaning towards just dropping the money on the Project Rudy glasses. Do the inserts add a lot of weight? They make life easy cuz you can switch out the lens while keeping the prescription.

Have you looked at the ESS ICE protective glasses? I have those with the Rx insert.

@rvicta I have. But without being able to try the inserts out, in terms of weight and fit, I'm kind of hesitant to go that way.

How did you get your glasses done? Where did you get yours from?

I actually got my glasses off Amazon and then ordered the insert with Rx lenses from ESS. I had just gotten a new prescription so I was able to use that. The one thing I did figure out is I probably have to go bi or tri focal on the lenses so the sights on my XD9 aren't so blurry.

Look at SPY, their frames are awesome and practically indestructible without the crappy Oakley CS. I have a really really jacked up prescription and use heavyglare.com to make my sunglasses, expensive as hell but they are the only ones I know of that can do wrap around with my crap script.

ETA Almost any place can make yellow lenses if thats what you are looking for.

That's true but they are so much more cumbersome than regular lenses. Like you, I liked the theory of inserts but didn't care for how they felt/worked. And you have to be able to try the inserts before you buy. If you have long eyelashes, for example, they're going to rub on the inserts and that's incredibly annoying. Rudy can put most prescriptions directly into the lens so you shouldn't need inserts unless you just want them for the reason you listed.

Also, many Optometrists can put a prescription lens into most frames. But it isn't always going to be the same quality as the Mfg. If you're going to spend the money on Rudy or Oakleys, make sure you send them out to THEIR labs to do the work.

You may also find this 60 Minutes expose on eye glasses interesting. It explains why they cost so much money. Basically the eye glass industry is a monopoly. Unfortunately. It's incredible what Rudy charges for their products. The markup is huge. But you don't have a whole lot of choices.

I'm not as stylish as you guys...

I just had my eye doctor whip up a set of safety glasses with amber colored lenses. She had to modify my prescription a little to move my point of focus but they work spiffy.
