I am wondering what you guys think. I am thinking of a sig x5 , but it is a lot of money and I would want the tactical x5 model, but it is probably not on the CA list. Is CZ compatible? Glock 34? HK?

google up target shooting competitions and see which 9mm target pistols they're using
then determine which gun(s) win the mostComment

cz tactical sport in 9mm is a good option if you want a gun that's on the roster
great price tooComment

I'd think a TC Contender with a 9mm super 14 barrel would be close to "the best" target pistol available.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor

First answer: Go to the local shooting range that has a good target shooting league (static targets or practical shooting). See what people use. You will find a wide variety of guns being used, and you will find that most of the shooters are very good.
Second answer: It doesn't actually matter that much. What matters is the ammunition. Namely the quantity. If you practice three times per week, each time shooting two hundred rounds, and you do that for 3 or 5 years (meaning you've gone through about 100,000 rounds), you will probably be a very good shooter. You will probably be able to outshoot most people, using nearly any gun. You will also have spent about 10x more on ammo and range fees than on the purchase of the gun itself.
Third answer: Many of the obvious candidates were already mentioned above. I personally use a P210 for pistol target shooting (static targets). The G34 is commonly seen, as are various Sig P226 variants (including X5 and X6). Cz 75 variants are common, as are some highly tuned 1911s (those are more common in .45, but exist in 9mm also). Brownings show up occasionally, as do H&Ks and exotics.Comment
