and tell me why a well armed citizenry is a benefit to the people as a whole.
Tell me of instances where this has been proven to be true. My hope is that we can compile enough evidence to show that the benefits far out weigh the downside of maintaining a well armed citizenry.
Please be respectful and accurate and try to leave the emotion out.

I can start with the most obvious. Well armed citizens formed into militias and helped win the revolutionary war. Not with simple hunting weapons but technologically advanced rifled barrels.

Benefit to the people as a whole? To prevent government tyranny. Gov. Brown won't like that answer though.

If you sign all the pending laws restricting firearms, will the entire State be as safe as Oakland?

If the California Department of Justice deems law-abiding citizens responsible enough to own firearms, then law-abiding citizens should be deemed responsible enough to carry a concealed firearm.

Make California a "shall issue state" for law abiding citizens.

Ask our good neighbor Nevada about how much the crime rate has decreased since law-abiding citizens started carrying concealed firearms!
