My wife is getting antsy about taking the handgun test. Does anyone know where to get a study guide or something? She's going down to look at her XD tomorrow, and I'd like to be able to tell her something supportive.

CalDOJ has a Handgun Safety Certificate study guide you can download on their web site...

Tell her not to stress and just read/review the .pdf that Amendment II posted. It's pretty straightforward and calls on common sense.

We both passed without missing any. That was depressing. With all the laws and regulations with handguns in this state, you would think that the test would involve quantum math and algorithmic logic. On the contrary, it was easy.

My wife is now T-minus 8 days for her 5" XD 9mm. I picked her up an M3 as well so she could maintain a secure grip. She's a southpaw and just fell in love with the XD.

Me, on the other hand, felt the effects of this state's red tape immediatly. I'm still waiting on the ever vigilant DMV to send me my hard copy driver's license. Without it, I can't get a happy meal in this state, let alone a gun. I was also introduced to a cute little issue called the "straw rule". Now, my blood was boiling. So, as soon as hard copy license is obtained, I'll try again.

Alright, just got my hard copy license today and should be meeting up to get my first 1911 tommorow. After my ten day wait, of course.

I'm bringing my car registration as the secondary, is this enough, or should I bring a utility bill too?

I had to take the test sort of suddenly because of a purchase opportunity. I thought I could get the card during my 10-day wait, but the dealer said no way, the won't even start the DROS without the card in hand. So I took the test without any prior study whatsoever.

It turns out the questions are not hard, but some of the 'correct' answers are more "politically correct" than factually correct. If you answer them channeling Sarah Brady you will get 100%.
There is a study guide you can download free from the CA DOJ.

As a frequent IPSC/USPSA competitor, I found the subsequent "safe gun handling demonstration" required by the dealer equally amusing.

We didn't have to do the gun handling demonstration. I don't know why, perhaps it's cause I go shooting with a couple of the employees. Anyway, 7 more days.

While that may be true, the safe handling demonstration is usually done when you go to pick your handgun up.
