    Out by a mile

Ok for those that had great luck with gun store boar sitting you scope and or Red Dot.
    This is not for you.

Now for the less fortunate, I have a new apprecation for you guys, as I am now one of you.

Yep that's right went to gun store for a boar site on not only a new Zeiss scope, but also on a canted Bushnell Red Dot.

What a PITA. Both of them were off by a country mile, we maybe not a mile, but Holy S**T.

Started at less than 25yds for Red Dot, my target is 38 high x 24 with splatter target. It was 24 inchs or more off point, guy told me it about 4 from center

Dam 20 rounds to get in there, then moved out to 40 another 10 to tweek it in, OK Im GTG now.

On to the scope, the guy tells me it's real close, So I start at 50 yds.
Holy crap, we are so far off I don't even know where I hitting.
After screwing around with it 7 GGM rounds. I'm am bummed out.

Call another guy from far end of range ask if he mite help out, he say sure.

I tell him that it's new rifle new optics and how it's been going, ask if he'll spot for me. He says sure. then looks at me an say would you like me to shot it and you spot, I say sure, and we proceed. He fires first round, I'm seeing the hit way way far right and way high, Pull it left 24 down 20.

We send another bingo we are now just touching the far upper right corner. Now left 24 Down 24. send it now we get close to paper.

Down 30 left 4. I now send it eureka finally got some good paper, down another 20 send it 2'' right of center on the horizontal.

Bingi couple small adjustments and we are in, but target is only 50 yds
I tell the guy thanks for the assistance, but have run through 2.5 box's of low price ammo, and 3/4 plus box of Fed GM.

Will finish another day, got things to do.

Morel at least for me is get a spotter when you start, and save some ammo ! As you cant see where your off paper hits are when your not on paper !

Did they use a laser boresighter? You can get a cheap one for under $40 which plugs into the end of the barrel- mine has always gotten me if not on paper, pretty darn close.

Or you can just look down the bore. I start at 100 yards, takes about 3 shots.

yup, I always did my bore sighting the old fashioned way. With some rifles like the M1A, that is not possible. I always bring a ruler with me though, because once you get on paper, accurate measurement of distance to center is a lot easier with a scale.

I'll mark a spot in the dirt with some surveyors tape, watch for the splash reports... adjust as necessary, then target my paper for final tune up... less then 10 shots

Hmmm, normally yes, but not if you're not even on the paper at 25 yards. You need an impact mark to adjust to. No mark = more shots until it's on the paper.

As long as you can see your POA and POI you're GTG. I like to use a dirt berm first. Then, the second shot will be in the 9 or 10 ring and I can make small adjustments from there.

You can always "shoot the corners". Pick a corner, aim at it and see where your bullet strikes on the paper. Work your way around the target if necessary. I've done that more than once.

I agree with the actual bore sighting, as in, look down the bore and center your target at 100 yards, keep everything still and adjust your scope to center our target. Hit paper, click your scope appropriately and you're done. Spend the next 50 rounds playing around.

That kinda of depends on the gun. A gun that is shooting large groups is going to need a few shots to get the group centered.
