    National Forest Question

I'm heading up to Plumas National Forest to camp for the weekend. I'm going to be camping with a buddy who's been going to the same undeveloped site for 23 years. Of course I'm going to bring a small arsenal for some target practice .

In searching this site and the NF homepage for info, I'm inclined to believe that I can open carry while in and around the site being that it is an undeveloped area. That's a good thing!

My question has to do with my Ca. legal 10 rd. fixed mag OLL AR. I've got it and some ammo packed for what will be the first shots since building it.

Is there a big risk of having trouble with the rangers over this weapon? I have the OLL declaration stating that it is not an assault weapon and citing the various penal codes pertaining to AWs packed in the rifle case. What are the chances of this being sufficient to keep an uninformed ranger from confiscating my weapon if we should have a visit?

What do you guys think? There's still time for me to put it back in the safe and leave it behind.

    Thanks in advance.

I'd say you'd be good to go. I have heard of LE responding to check on a report of gunshots in the forest, but if you are legal with everything I can't see any reason to worry.

In my neck of the woods the only place I see USFS LEOs is in the Ranger District parking lot. They are under-staffed and have to cover alot of ground and only show up if the District Ranger request enforcement for a situation beforehand. In a undeveloped site where your friend's family has used for decades, I 'd say go for it and leave a clean camp and "range". I only say this because I come across "family campsites" with broken glass, brass and other shot up "stuff" and it gives responsible gun owners a bad rep.

        Enjoy your trip,

Thanks for the advice fellas and I'll definitely leave a clean camp afterwards(I always do my best).

It'll be nice to be in the mountains this weekend, especially considering the forecasted temps for the valley for the next few days!

As long as your shooting far away from the public and not in around the campground you shouldn't even find a ranger. I shoot up there once or twice a year, but I go several miles up a FS 4wd road where I don't expect to see anyone. Not sure where you are going, but there is a BLM shooting range just outside Sierra City

We're going to be camping very near the Feather river, east of Quincy about 15 miles. This will be my first trip to that area so I don't know the exact location yet.

In August, I do a week on the Stanislaus river near Hwy 4 @ Dorrington. That's my favorite trip of the year.

Take a target stand, one of the fold up saw horse stands that you can staple your targets to works, Remember don't shoot trees and they will look for the targets stand.

I never even thought about that. I'm going to go to OSH and pick up some conduit and fittings and bend up a makeshift stand this morning. I'll zip tie a piece of plywood to the conduit to attach the targets to.

                    Thanks for the tip!

After reading ricknadine1111's advice, I went out and fabbed up a target stand. Total cost $10:
