Do you want an AOW or C&R SBS/SBR in CA?

Just make sure the out of state gunsmith is really a licensed FFL and not just some hobbyist who works on guns.

There's no requirement that it be shipped in the original box. If you do ship it in the original box, be sure to put that box in a plane outer box. You don't want anything on the outside of the package that indicates there is a firearm inside. If the package is going to Bob's Gunsmithing, just put Bob's on the first line of the address. If it's going to Acme Gun Repair, just put AGR. You get the idea.

UPS and FedEx both require handguns to be shipped overnight. So it might cost you $90 to ship it.

I just did this a couple days ago.

Fedex will be cheaper than UPS, by my quotes. YMMV.
Fedex requires a handgun to ship "Overnight Priority".
A Fedex medium box will fit an S&W M&P blue box perfectly.
When introducing firearms for shipping, some employees will be have no clue, some will be scared, some will be pros. I had all three the other day.
It will cost around $45-100, depending on your options for insurance, destination, Saturday pick-up, etc.
