    Turner's and Big 5 Complaints

It seems like a good percentage of the threads on here have some sort of slam against either Turner's, or Big 5. If you all hate them so much then don't shop there. Simple as that. Spend your hard earned dollars down at your local gun shop, and not some big retail chain store.

Of course, a lot of you won't do that. You're going to keep shopping at Turner's and Big 5, and then come on Calguns and post about your bad experiences. Like how the sales clerks are rude, have very little gun knowledge, and how the store polices are ridiculous, etc.

It's amazing how much abuse a person will take in order to save a few bucks.

I'd suspect that a lot of the customers complaining are referring to their 1st experience buying a firearm at those locations.

Let me add Bass Pro to this slam list.

MY gripe with Turners is their "If it ain't a SIG it ain't worth a damn" attitude. I've several people walk out and not buy a gun because they can't afford the one being pushed on them. They walk in for an XD or Glock, and are told their choice is crap. I heard one guy reccomend an M&P (I almost lost my mind I was soo thrilled), but the same cat later said that "Possession of hi-caps is illegal, yadda yadda."

Turners sale prices kick butt, and they got some foxy broads working in there. I just wish they would take the time and educate their employees on laws, and not push the high end stuff on low end buyers.

FYI, have bought more than one gun from them this year. I am glad I required no input....just a good price.

Frankly, I like Turners, and I only have a small beef with Big5.

My complaint with Big5 is that 10-day +1 thing they have. They always say that you can't pick up your gun until the day AFTER the 10-day wait expires. I don't regularly buy guns at Big5, and I've only bought one there in the last 3 years or so (about 6 months ago), and I didn't care enough to fight it.

However, a friend of mine has gone in after his 240 hours were up and demanded his gun, and they gave it to him. He buys a lot of mausers and nagants there for cheap shooting.

Like I said, it's a small beef, and I'd buy from Big5 again.

As for Turners, I don't understand all the hostility. I've bought MANY guns at Turners (City of Orange and Fountain Valley) and always had good luck.

I've never done a PPT at Turners, so I can't respond to those complaints.

Turners even once had two pistols on sale at the same time that I wanted to buy, but because of the @!#(*@$ retarded 30-day thing in california, they informed me that I could put one on layaway and buy one right now. Awesome! So I did that, and exactly 30 days after the first DROS, I came in and paid the second one off and DROS'ed it. The layaway reserved the sale price for me. I would never have known to do that until an employee was nice enough to let me know. I would have bought the other handgun at full price anyways, so that was very cool of him.

As to the OLL thing, whatever. I don't see any reason for demanding that Turners transfer OLL's JUST because they are legal. There are plenty of other shops for that (Thanks J&J!!).

I like Turners, I have good experiences at Turners, and I'll continue to shop at Turners.

So far I have nothing but good words for them, namely:

          Turner's - San Marcos & Corona
          BassPro - Victoria Gardens
          Big 5 - Murrieta

I like Turner's as well. I've purchased (2) handguns from the Pasadena store over the past few months. Both times I went there I already knew what I was going to buy. The sales clerk did not offer any advice or opinions, nor did I ask for any. I have received courteous, and prompt service every time I've been in the store. I will continue to shop there when they have something that I'm looking for on sale.

I always give turners a chance to match prices. If they do I buy from them if not I'll buy from budsgunshop.com and FFL through Gunrunners.

All in all I've had good experienced with turners. I have not bought any firearms from big 5 and doubt I will.

Same here. I've had nothing but good experiences at the Daly City and El Cerrito Big 5 stores. And, if there were a Turners in Northern California, I'd give them a shot too.

no problems with Big5 in Van Nuys or Turners in Reseda.

Most salesmen will sell you what they're told to sell you, or whatever has highest commission rate. What you want to buy is not a concern of theirs, they're salesmen.

LOL I thought an 11 day wait was bad at Big 5 till I ended up waiting 12 days for my frigging pistol. I think the guy had the calendar date wrong but I didnt' say anything since the 12th day was a friday and it was easier to pick up on that day anyway.

No bad experiences for me with the Turner's in Kearny Mesa or the Big 5 off of East H street.

I find this to be the predominant reason, and/or it may be their first PERSONAL bad experience at either, so they post it, as they never heeded the warnings from those that had already posted their own anecdotes of being jilted unnecessarily.

On that note, I've never had any serious problems with Turner's that couldn't have been massaged into a positive experience in some other way. And mostly? I just go in, already know what I want, point to what I want, do the paperwork, and buy it. 10 days later - pick-up, still no questions. If they don't have what I want, I ask if they have any in the warehouse (about the only question I've ever asked of a Turner's employee)- if the answer is no or they are out, I leave.

                        .

i went to BIG 5 yesterday to do a PPT on a lower and they had no idea how to do a PPT. Not because of the fact that i had an OLL, because i didnt even tell them what i had yet, he just said he had to make some calls to the corporate.

Bought my M91 at big 5 a couple years back.
Clerks let me inspect several of them until I found one I was satisfied with bore wise.
Went to fill out the paperwork, and they halted it right at the part with my DL address not matching where I actually lived. I knew you could buy with proof of residency via a utility bill (just moved in) and they refused. Stated it was store policy, and they were sorry, but they couldn't help me.
My wife walked over and said she fancies herself a rifle then Guys filled out the paperwork since her DL matched where we lived. They were cool as hell about it.

Another time I went shopping for an M38, couldn't find any at any local gun shops. Went there, and he said that he thinks they used to carry them, but don't any longer. He could see I was kinda bummed, so he looked to see if they could get them from century, and was blocked there too. Stated he'd call around to the surrounding stores in LA county and took my name and phone number and would call me back if he could locate one. He called me a few days later, said he couldn't find any and apologized.

So far, nothing but a good experience there. The last guy shocked me how far he went to sell me a 100 dollar rifle.

WOW, a local gun shop WOULD be great! I support my local OLL supporters, I've even had guns bought online shipped to them.

When I am buying a gun, I research what I am looking for and have a list of "wants". I've found long ago that people in places like Turners want you to buy the gun they want to sell, not necessarily the one that fits my list of wants.

Big 5, have dealt with them twice, no more.

Turners, I'll counter surf and see if there is something on my "wants" list and if it is reasonably priced. I'll ONLY go there for PPT if the other party insists. I've only had ONE good experience with Turners for a gun purchase. It was a PPT and the guy handling the transfer was knowledgeable and efficient. Actually knew the various exemptions to HSC and Safe Handling and got through the entire transaction in under a half hour. The last time I was at Turners for a PPT (I was selling) the guy was a complete moron. We were there for two hours while the guy stumbled all over himself doing the paperwork.

Bass Pro Shops, crappy selection and not so great prices. Counter staff seems just as ignorant as those at Turners... some of the faces there were FROM Turners, big shock.

So now I'll do my shopping online and have it sent to Bright Spot Pawn. Reasonable transaction fee, and if I decide to buy from Davidson's, Bright Spot is also a dealer for them.

Are there ANY gun stores in the Chino/Ontario/Upland/Rancho area? I am looking forward to visiting Sportsman's Warehouse in Victorville next week.
