Firearm Storage for a College student (specifically Flagstaff, AZ)

not sure where to post this, but I asked on another forum so I will just copy and paste:

A bit early for this as I wouldnt leave till next summer, but I already applied to my schools ( 3 ) and am just waiting on the other for a response.

one of the things I am concerned about is firearm storage, I have a handgun and rifle I want to take with me because the areas I am looking at have good hunting, and are situated within national forest.

Both Idaho and Montana have on campus storage, but the school I am looking at the hardest is Northern Arizona University, they have no where to store a gun for students unless you own a car ( you can store it in your vehicle on campus)

Does anyone have any options of storing a firearm, or anyone live in Flagstaff, AZ that knows of somewhere to store em?

I have thought of self storage, but the thought of a break-in doesnt ring to well, another I have heard is storing them with a gun store or range.

    any suggestions?

    thanks,
    -Adam

edit: while not a deal breaker because I am really there for their program, it is quite a let down as the main reason I am leaving california is because of firearm laws, general contempt for peoples rights and the way the economy is going here and a big part of what I do outside of school is hunting, shooting and reloading,.

Getting a car isn't an option?

Though if you do get a car, make sure it isn't a thief magnet (i.e. Honda Civic or Acura Integra, or a number of other ones that are sought after by thieves), and try to make the car as inconspicuous as possible.

Sorry I don't have any other advice.

I barely have enough money for college, so yah, as much as I wish, I wont have a car, not atleast for a year or two, and I dont really want to leave them here.
If i get a car it will be a smaller trucl

When I went to U of A i just kept them in my car, or my roomates car who was also a big gun owner. I kept any identifying stickers off of my car just in case and they would be completely hidden. If you can't make arrangements to keep them then just leave them home for the first semester until you can find a place. I'm sure there's a shooting or hunting club at NAU that can help you find a place as well. Good luck, Flag is a beautiful area .

Live off campus? Ask somebody who lives off campus to let you store your guns at their place?

I knew of guns that were quietly kept in dorm rooms at NAU; I shouldn't have known about them but some people talk too much.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

Some ranges have lockers you can rent and you can store your firearms there, I know the range I go to, Reed's Indoor Range does this. You should check out the local range and gun clubs and see if this is possible.

Or, if your rifle can be broken down to compact pieces, it might fit into a bank security deposit box. Just make sure the gun is broken down first before you go to the bank.

Send me a PM. I've got some folks up in Flag that might know.

I've been out to the Northern Arizona Shooting Range. I can't imagine they have lockers for rent. Their only building is a little trailer/shack in the middle of nowhere. Nice range though.

Adam- I am currently attending NAU and unfortunately am living in an on campus apartment and there are no storage spots for guns on campus. I currently only brought a pistol with me that I keep locked up in my car. I know you said that you do not have a car but from what ive found so far thats about the only solution, which doesnt even cover any long arms. I am continuing to look for a place to store a rifle securely up here and I well let you know of my findings.

I went to NAU and when I was there (mid-90's) you could store them at NAU PD's station on campus. It was inconvenient so most of us just kept them in the dorm rooms

Thank you guys for the tips,

@lucky13gunner, I would appreciate that, do you think any of the gun stores around there might store them? I just really would prefer to not leave them here.

OP, sounds like you will be living in a dorm? Although their rules say no guns in the dorm, both myself and the guy across the hall, and the guy 2 doors down all had rifles or shotguns. It's Arizona fer cryin out loud! But that WAS a long time ago, and times have changed a lot.

Back then there was a shooting club on campus. I'm sure they had storage for club members. If it's still around maybe you can join and stash your hunting rifle too. For a handgun, there was one drawer in the built-in that they were not allowed to look in during inspections. We were supposed to stash our hot plates and all other forbidden stuff in it. It may be different in other dorms.

Hunting will bring about it's own hassles. Skinning and cleaning your critters is basically impossible in a dorm and there's nowhere to cook it or keep it in the freezer. The mini-fridge in our room had a freezer that would only hold an ice tray.

yah I would be in the dorm for the first year, there doesnt seem to be a shooting or hunting club currently but there is an archery club on campus and hunters are welcome so I will join that since I bow hunt too.

That is nice to know about the drawer, as for the hunting, I hunt mainly small game so it is skinned and cleaned than as well as cooked, besides that I just love to shoot and try to go atleast twice a month right now.
