    Note to self:Bug Out Bags

"My children have never had to do without," Johnson, 22, said almost apologetically. "But we don't have anything. There is no milk for the baby, no clothes, no deodorant, no hair stuff. The storm messed up everything."

A reporter gave Johnson a sandwich for the children, a bottle of cold water and cookies. They ate in the reporter's car and, and for a few minutes, life seemed normal.

When store employees came out to empty water-soaked fruit and vegetables into a crate in front of the store, dozens of people rushed up, knocking each other out of the way to grab what they could. They went home with handfuls of apples, oranges and other items, most of which probably were unsafe to eat.

Lena Mae Stanton had another idea. She decided to try the trash bin at the side of the building. But as soon as she got there, others came. They picked out what wasn't soggy or rotten before the store employee asked them to leave.

"I was trying to see what kind of food I could find," said Stanton, 59, who has no food at home for her six grandchildren. "I got some apples and oranges. I know it's probably not safe, but I will wash them off the best I can."

    Yup...

I normally travel with a partial bugout bag in my truck. Coupla polo shirts, underwear/socks, spare wash & dry pants, and tennis shoes along with a spare shaving kit (toothbrush/paste, comb, razors). Also always carry 2 rolls TP, Lysol and BabyWipes in my truck.

Drop in a few med supplies, bottled water, boots, Clorox, guns & ammo, cat food, cat litter, carrier, and my truck is ready to go to Oregon (family).

Always keep a spare $1000 cash at home. ATM networks can go down, etc.

If you have a small pet or two, make provisions now for their safe exit & provisioning along with you.

I tried that route, but somehow the money always disappeared from my safe and showed up at the Cow Palace Gun shows. Figured gold coins and jewelry is a safer route. But after today, maybe I will keep a $1000 rubberbanded in a sealed envelope inside a small box inside the locking cabinet of my gun safe.

Oh, add water filter to my BOB. Lighter, cigs (for trading) and small gas stove and flashlight.

After reading about groups of armed rioters running around New Orleans, I think several of my pistols and my Remington 1100 will join my emergency kit. I already have MRE, water, water filter, camping stove with fuel, first aid kit, flashlight and batteries. Now I've got to find room for ammo.

Shhhh!!! don't tell everybody what you got!

Don't you remember what happened to Ned Flanders when he told Homer who in turn told the town of Springfield of Ned's new bomb shelter?

FRANCE launched a nuke at Springfield and everyone piled into Ned's Bomb shelter for safety. There was no room for 1 extra person... so they all voted and Ned got kicked out!!

If I have a small pet and I have not food, I'm BBQing it

I have been thinking more and more bout getting a backpack ready for my family.

I'm looking for something we can eat that is light, has a long shelf life, and filling in low amounts with the proper nutrition to feed adults and kids for a few days. Does a Powerbar fit this bill? Any other options. MRE's maybe but they cost a lot and not as small as I would like.

Always keep water in mind. I have read that it is better to keep canned fruit, soup, stew, anything with moisture in it. This cuts down on the water you need to hydrate yourself and eliminates needing water to cook. Shelf life is years--we just rotated some canned fruit out that was 6 years old, opened it, and it was fine.

I do Red Cross earthquake preparedness for spanish speaking people. The Red cross has great info including lists for people that dont know what to pack.
From small house fires to multi-state disasters, the Red Cross goes wherever we’re needed, so people can have clean water, safe shelter and hot meals when they need them most.

I always tell people the dollar stores have ready to eat meals that will keep for years. The more you prepare the less likely you will be a victim, and more likely wil be part of the solution.

My family can survive for 10 plus days with the reserves I have. A camp stove and fuel is a must. They make some that run on unleaded gas and other fuels as well.

ivanimal, great link, but of course the PC Red Cross suggest NOT having any weapons in your survival gear (see bottom of page.) Of course we will all ignore that bit of advice won't we?

I think I can replicate this kit, but better and cheaper, than buying it. The key is, of course, whether I actually get around to DO IT.

But I disagree with their battery powered flashlight and radio, for example. The hand-crank powered ones, will store indefinitely, and seem less likely to go dead when you need it.

Since I already have some of this stuff, and the kit has to be tailored anyway, I will just work up my own. But it's a great checklist to use to get it going.

After looking at the news reels of the aftermath my wife asked me if we had enough ammo. Methinks I will do a run of 223 I'm getting below 1000. I suggest also if you dont have an axe or hatchet that you should get one right away. I dont know a proper survival kit without one.

I would hope that any of our fellow forum members that hunt would have ALL the necessary survival gear ready and packed always. Ya just can't leave camp or your rig without being prepared. My huntin' pards are always quacking me about wearing my back-pack and fanny pack even when we're dove hunting on the familiar acreage of the ranch. **** happens anywhere, any time! Call me paranoid, but this is Commiefornia and I, for one, am not gonna be looking for help from the state regime bootjacks. When the SHTF I'm all me and mine have between us and them. Just my two cents worth. Peace and God bless, Wolfsong.
