the navy Seals in Vietnam loved it, for some reason it never was used by other units. it was light and could be belt fed 556. not much info about it.anybody here have experience with one ?

No, the Stoner was a squad auto/LMG. The piston AR is the AR-180, which was cheaper to make than an AR-15. It had a number of features that made it better than the AR-15, including a scope mounting base welded on the receiver.Comment

I don't think Stoner ever worked on the AR180, although didn't AR base their AR180 off Stoners AR16? From what I've read, most of his designs are piston based and in 7.62 NATO.
