Is there some specific reason it needs to be chrome lined and not something like melonite?

There are actually 4 pages and while yes, most of the stuff is currently OOS, they do have a few various caliber/priced uppers available. Plus, if you subscribe to their email notifications, you will be notified of sales/specials and have a chance to find something nice. They go in and out of stock pretty regularly. They'll probably have some others in stock soon, mainly because they just had a Labor Day sale and are probably depleted due to that. Check them again I a few days.

Last month they sent me an email about a special, I ordered it and got it in less than ten days. Beats the crap out of waiting 8 1/2 months (so far) for the RRA upper I ordered last December.

            Sorry, not sorry.

I didn't know that you could chrome stainless. Chrome plating the bore would defeat the benefits of SS.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong...

                  im here to learn.

i assumed stainless and chrome lined was the way to go.

                  does that not exist?

i was thinking stainless on the outside and chrome lined on the inside.

so if a barrels stainless, its inside and out?

is stainless better than chrome lined?

for this build im more concerned with longevity than accuracy and dont plan on putting thousands and thousands of rounds thru it. i want something i can shoot occasionally that is quality and that i can pass down to my son in 20 years with no worries of corrosion.

If its stainless, it's the entire barrel; not a specific portion or outside of the barrel ...

My research led me to Noveske Afghans, LWRC's (NICORR Coated) and LMT. SonofWWIIDI sounds like he came across a pretty good deal.

There is so much more to look at than just Chrome Lined. Things like, what process was used to make the barrel, IE: Cold Hammer Forged.

I'm building my first AR and am in my 8th month of research to get the products that meet my needs. I decided on the LWRC M6A2 for many reasons. Guys will come on here and tell you many valid reasons why they went with their completely different rig.

I spent many hours on companies websites (to see what process was used to make their products) and then YouTube (100's of hours) to see if their claims lived up to the consumer. I read blog after blog on CG to seek valuable insight.

Don't rush and do a ton of research. Good luck

Stainless steel is a type of metal, just like aluminum, iron, and gold are types of metal. It's basically steel with other metals mixed in (chromium, for instance) that prevent rust from forming and spreading. Carbon steel is more pure than stainless, so it needs to be treated or a layer of finish applied (like chrome) to prevent rusting.

for this build im more concerned with longevity than accuracy and dont plan on putting thousands and thousands of rounds thru it. i want something i can shoot occasionally that is quality and that i can pass down to my son in 20 years with no worries of corrosion.

Either a stainless barrel, or one that's chrome lined will last a long time. Generally speaking, for the best accuracy, you want a non-lined carbon steel barrel, because it's stiffer than stainless steel, and the rifling will be more consistent than chrome-lined. Of course, the drawback is that it will rust more quickly, and it'll also wear down more quickly.

But since you want general longevity, either stainless or chrome-lined will give you the results you want.

An advantage of stainless steel (you may also it called chrome steel) is that since it is rust-resistant without a coating, but because of the impurities that resist rust, it's a softer metal than carbon steel (meaning that barrels aren't as rigid). It also can tend to be harder to clean.

The advantage of chrome-lined barrels is that you can use a standard carbon steel barrel (again, more rigid than stainless), and just add the chrome lining to prevent rust. The disadvantage is that like any finish, it can wear and flake off the barrel, and also because it's a coating, it may not be a consistent thickness through the barrel (less likely with modern barrels). Also, since it has a thickness, the barrel needs to be cut a hair oversized so that after the coating is applied, the bore will have the proper diameter.

But yea, you're probably not going to notice major differences between the two. I've got a Japanese Type 99 Ariksaka from the first half of WWII, and the barrel still looks bright and new because the Japanese used to chrome-line their barrels.

Actually it's Corrosion Resistant Steel or CRES for short.

There are two types of CRES, austenitic non-ferrous and CRES with iron that is heat treatable. The 300 series (austenitic) is highly rust resistant however the 400 series ferrous CRES can rust. Barrels are made with ferrous alloys.

It's not but the stiffness will be determined by each alloy, although they are all very close.

No chrome steel or Chromium steel are high strength steel alloys but are not CRES.

Hardness will depend on the alloy but they are all very similar.

Sorry, Mechanical engineer, I like to keep things accurate.
