2 stage VS Single stage (Help)

Building my first AR. One of the last things I need is the trigger.

What are the Pros/Cons of 2 stage versus Single Stage triggers?

The gun is going to be used primarily for Home/Property defense. Secondary use will be non-competitive recreational target shooting.

    Thanks in advance!!

Theres a lot of other options to consider than simply signle vs 2stage trigger the weights are going to play a big role as well. I use a geissele sdc because of the relatively light second stage and the ability to prep the shot aftwr taking up the slack from the first. Its also no too light that i wouldnt feel comfortable using it in a defensve situation and ive done well with it using it in competion also. I dont like the gritty milspec triggers as the take up is pretty horrible and what is supposed to be a single stage feels like you have a bunch of bumpy middle stages. Also a high end geissele like the sd 3gun has a heavier single stage than the second stage on mine. I can not effectivley prep the shot with it and there is not a huge speed advantage with the single. Youll really just have to shoot a few to see what you like. Range day calgunners?

Single stage triggers work best with very light pull weights and that is hard to do and keep the trigger function safe for most military rifles. A two stage trigger allows for a very safe trigger and reasonable pull weights. For the AR15, a two stage makes more sense.

I have had both, and although the two stage triggers can be very light, i still like my KIDD single stage at 1.5 lbs.

For your application, IMHO the Geiselle SSA-E would be ideal. The first stage is smooth and allows confidence and readiness to execute shot. The second stage break is absolutely superb with a fantastic short reset. However, my new favorite is the SD3G. Unbelievable performance and makes rapid shooting very very exciting, but definitely not for self defense applications or if you typically shoot from the bench. Also, nothing beats Geiselle quality and absolutely the best customer service in the high end sellers market we currently are in.

Sounds like you need a 2-stage trigger IMO. I would get a quality 2 stage trigger and call it a day. Look at Geissele SSE or any of the geissele 2 stage triggers made. If you're on a budget and just want to try one out before investing too much into it, look at the RRA or CMMG 2-stage triggers. Good luck either way.

Get a ALG single stage. Works great for a single stage and it's only $45 bucks.

Another +1 for the Geiselle SSA-E! Need the $ for 2 more for my other AR's :-)

Once you go Geissele SSA, G2S or SSA-E you'll never go back to a singel stage trigger again. The SSA or the G2S is just about the same trigger with a 4.5lb pull on the second stage and it's nice and crisp. The difference between the two is one is well inspected and has laser markings in it (SSA) and the other (G2S) is still inspected but not the same wat as the SSA and it does not have the laser markings on it. You can pick an SSA up for $190-$200 and the G2S for $150-$160. Again they shoot the same way I have both. Also if it makes you happier the SSA trigger is used in the SOPMOD program and it's almost in every service Ar-15 that's in Afghanistan. If it's good for the Militaru and Law Informant then it's good for us.

Also if you're going to use it for HD then you would really need a 2 stage trigger because you always know after you pull on the first stage on the second stage will come the shot but with a singel stage you can't do that. Also your fallow up shoots are going to be much more accurate.

I have never liked or seen the point of a two-stage trigger. To me they just feel like a glock trigger- pull some, it gets harder, pull more, click. A good single stage is just like a 1911: no movement or creep, just click.

I really prefer a high quality single stage, with the pull weight dependent on the intended use for the gun. For a target bolt rifle, I like a 3-4 ounce pull. For my AR (built as a "fighting" gun, not a target rifle) my absolute favorite is the Wilson Combat Tr-ttu 4lb single stage. There is no take up and no creep, extremely clean break. You put your finger on the trigger and there zero movement until it breaks. Shooting fast or squeezing slow, it breaks clean every time. Every time I've tried a two stage it feels great for slow target shots but has too much movement for quick shots IMO.

Try them both, try every trigger you can and find out what you prefer.

I have them on both of my AR's. 4.5 pound pull breaks clean every time.
