I recently moved to SoCal and the lack of ranges where I can shoot rifle cartridges has been increasingly frustrating. Ammo prices aside, as a college student I don't have the most disposable income. I tried out the Laserlyte Laser Trainer, and have trained with it for about a week. There are fewer purchases I think will save more money in less time. It is a good feeling to have muscle soreness from raising your pistol/rifle to target without dropping $100 in ammo.
I went with the Reaction Tyme target and the appropriate cartridge for my pistol and rifle. At 2.5" targets I do wish they were a little larger but at the same time for me to reflexively hit 2.5" targets in 4-7 seconds at varying angles and distances I'm liking it. I am definitely past the phase of statically standing at a target and shooting paper. This allows regular training at home or in the backyard and it does prepare me for first shot. I do have to be mindful not to rack the slide when I am shooting real ammo again but the level of practice this tool allows; I am surprised there hasn't been more praise for this system, especially for PRK.
