Can I transfer my guns through a notary public now so he can possess them when he is 18? If not what are my options? I want him to inherit them.

If you are both California residents then you can transfer long guns to him right now with no paperwork at all. For handguns he needs to be 18+ years old and have a Handgun Safety Certificate and he would need to report the handgun transfers to CalDOJ.

If you want him to inherit them when you die then include instructions in your will.

If it is a long gun; you hand your child the rifle, say "son, this is yours now. Don't shoot your eye out".
