14.5" barrel legality questions

Hey All,

Im not sure if this is posted in the right place or not, but I have a question about the legalities of being in possession of a 14.5" barrel (just the barrel itself) that still needs to be pinned.

I want to start a new 14.5" pinned build, but im not gonna start buying parts until things are cleared up.

legitimate help/info only please, no deadbeat speculation(s)...

Is this for an AR? If so, do you currently own an AR pistol? Also, do you currently own or have possession/control of an AR rifle?

Barrel length is measured from the bolt face (in battery) to the muzzle crown. An ATF or other interested LEO will insert a rod down the barrel, mark the length at the crown or observe a ruler tic mark on the rod.

A good question is; if a muzzle brake is welded or pinned to reach the 16" Federal required length, can you have a shorter barrel?

It may be possible to have a 14" or 15" barrel if a muzzle brake is welded or blind pinned. Maybe.

A welded would be safer if such a thing is allowed since it may be equivalent to a ported barrel.

There are many senior members and a few attorneys better suited to answer.

And if in doubt; don't do it.

In order avoid contructive posession you must meet one of the following caveats:

1. Posess the under 16" barrel and do NOT posess an AR-15 rifle of any kind.
2. Posess the under 16" barrel AND also posess a legalAR pistol
3. Posess an SBR tax stamp (not bloody likely in Kalifor ia)
4. Ensure that 14.5" barrel is pinned/welded before it gets to your posession.

I have an AR pistol.
Therefore, I have no issue with possessing a short AR barrel.

I can receive your short AR barrel, do the assembly with whatever parts you send me, do the perm attach and then give/send you back the completed upper meeting the 16"+ barrel length requirements so that YOU do not need to ever be in danger of SBR constructive possession.
