Fog or stream - pepper spray

    Apologies if wrong sub-forum
I have been reading various forums in which people have weapons confiscated and or face jail time due to use of firearms in home defense.

I want o switch my primary (handgun) to a backup and use pepper spray as primary.

question? would I be better off using fog or stream type device for inside home? I know stream has a better {reach} but the radius is not as good as the fog and obviously fog does not have the reach. I am leaning towards fog, but wonder if anyone has a suggestion which may help?

I would buy a pepper spray they cost about $50 bucks but are very nice. They look like kinda a mini flare gun with a opening where you can put a cannister or pepper spray. Gun has a safety, that stops accidents. When the trigger is pulled a stream of pepper spray is fired. The spray will go up to about 10 yards or so and is very accurate.

You can also buy water test cans to practice with thsi weapon.

Go with stream and get some inert trainers. Foggers tend to get on you as much as on your attacker.

Please share the stories you have read about homeowners getting into trouble for using a gun to protect themselves in their home.

For spray- saber makes an 2 1/2 ounce model that is CA legal

Don't be shocked if criminals who break into places have been sprayed 3-5 times already and are not that impressed when they get sprayed again.

The police all get sprayed and then must "fight" after being sprayed.
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
          (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Yeah I am worried about being compromised with the fogger, but also concerned about the area covered (since it may be dark and I don't think the lights would be on) I think fogs have a 5-8 ft range while streamers are about 15 - Obviously the greater distance between both can be an advantage/disadvantage.
Another type I heard of was a foamer, but also understand that the chem reaction time is delayed with that.

I don't have copies of these stories (and the writers, may have made them up) but I do understand that a perp injured-not killed, may sue the homeowner for various reasons.

any reason above 2 1/2 oz is illegal in cali? I was considering a 1lb fogger

edit- Nevermind read a 1 liner which also states 2.5 limitation (not sure why though)

                Wait...what?

So it's 2 o'clock in the morning and something goes "bump" and you're going to go investigate it with pepper spray?

What does using "pepper spray as primary," mean exactly?

And stop worrying about your firearm getting confiscated. Facing jail time I understand. But geez, if you lose an $800 gun or even a $3000 gun in the defense of your life or your family's it will still be the best damn money you ever spent.

BTW...what do you think happens when you set off pepper spray INSIDE your house? Odds are pretty good YOU will be affected too. More so with fog I suspect. But now you've got some nut inside your house and maybe the spray works on him and maybe it doesn't...but it's working on you so things should get pretty interesting.

Because some pinhead politician somewhere decided that we can only be trusted with 2.5 oz at a time. Does it really matter why? It's illegal.

Then again, maybe it's not such a bad law if you were considering setting off a 1lb fogger INSIDE your house.

You bring up some interesting points, and yes, I would use a firearm to defend my life or family, but @ the same time I also do not want to be incarcerated. Gun(s) confiscated? PIA, but I could deal with it.
Just would not want to get jail time, and more importantly fire at perp, he somehow get out way and the rounds go through a wall - sleeping loved one.

LOL -no it is not like an insect fogger. It has a trigger release and can be stopped after releasing the trigger.

                          Heck
You pretty much will use anything around as an improvised weapon of attacked

If that is a 1 pound bear spray can that you left on the coat rack as that is where you leave the home to go for a hike.....

I bet the crim would have fun trying to sue for putting substances into their eyes that were not made for humans.

That is why you have renters insurance/ homeowners insurance to cover you from Nusance suits.

Yep- that is pretty funny (unless it happens to you) I thought about that and with my adrenalin running, would have to be extra careful.

Now that the 2.5 law has been brought to my attention, I may need to look at streaming instead of the fog method.

Just need to figure out how many shots I can with it b4 I need to resort to backup.

goin to bed now guys, I really appreciate the feedback everyone has provided!

I think you're smart for wanting to use an escalation of force plan... I do. If you don't have multiple options all you're doing is putting yourself in a bad position. I also agree that using deadly force is the absolute LAST OPTION you want to use. The keyboard warriors will balk at that but anyone with a brain knows if you use deadly force you ARE DEFFINATLY going to be put thru the legal wringer.

I would go with a stream spray as foggers will have an extremely high likelihood of blowback. Get a nice sized can and don't stop spraying till it's empty. Also don't wait till they get so close you can touch them. The whole point of Less than lethal is to use it as a stand off option. I keep a no go zone when in a confrontation. If you get in that zone it's on like Donkey Kong. Now that doesn't mean I wouldn't back up if I could but I will escalate if that zone is breached.

Get a really good action plan together and practice it. Muscle memory is your friend when you're in a confrontation. If you have to think about it you're already screwed.
