I did an awsome job polishing my glock barrel, however I noticed afterwards...the cotton that I used to plug the barrel had signs of rust. I was pissed. I ran a brush through it, than a few folded white cloths, after I put some oil on a cloth and ran it through...no more signs of rust. No visual signs of pitting either! Can rust just be eliminated with a thorough clean up? Thanks...

Rust in Glock Barrel...

Are you sure it is rust and not copper fouling? I have yet to find corrosive 9mm ammo. It could also be residue left over from your cleaning solvent.Last edited by Chameleon Loco; 08-31-2013, 5:33 PM.Want to Buy: Ruger PC9 Magazine Buttstock Pouch -
Perhaps....All I could be sure of is that there were no pitting, and the rust seemed to dissapear after a Thorogh cleaning. Never experienced copper fouling before so I wouldnt know, Ido know that the junk on the cotton looked just like rust.Comment

Worried about rust on the inside of the barrel (probably copper fouling) but just got done removing the finish from the outside of the barrel... something is not right here.
Even if the polishing didn't remove the tenifer you removed one line of defense.
Hope you keep it oil'd up.Last edited by Chaos47; 08-31-2013, 8:26 PM.Comment

you polished the outside of the barrel? why?
Their is no such thing as steel ammo, their are steel cases, and steel core lead ammo with a copper jacket.Comment

I polished the barrel simply to see if it could be done without paying someone else to do it, and without any kind.od machinery. A polished barrel looks good, and doesnt hurt or manipulate the performance.Comment

You do realize that shiny barrels are usually either stainless steel, or have been coated with a shiny finish (hard chrome, for instance), right?
Glocks use carbon steel in their barrels, which is more susceptible to rust. They then subject the barrels and slides to the Tennifer surface treatment, which should protect the steel, but it's thickness is measured in microns. If you remove the black to reveal the surface, and then polish the surface too much, you risk removing the tennifer as well, and that reveals the untreated steel.
Why would you polish the inside of your barrel anyway? And I don't recommend plugging your barrel unless you leave your gun out in the elements for days at a time. Plugging your barrel can trap moisture, and hold it to the surface.Comment

He didn't polish the inside he temporarily plugged the end of it so he would not get polishing compound inside. You do realize that shiny barrels are usually either stainless steel, or have been coated with a shiny finish (hard chrome, for instance), right?
