    Transporting rifle question

I just got a new car that has a really small trunk. My M1A will not fit in the trunk, so is there a way I can transport it in the passenger compartment legally?

If I do something like remove the trigger group, and have a cable lock through the receiver - with the trigger group and key to the cable lock in the trunk, would that be enough? If not, would removing the bolt and locking it in the trunk make a difference?

    tia,
    Bill

You can thank the UOC crowd for getting the laws changed. A cable lock won't do, disassembling your rifle won't do. The only way to legally transport it in CA is in a locked container. So, it has to be enclosed in a locked container to be legal in most areas of CA.

There are plenty of soft cases that will fill the requirements of a locked case. I use the rectangular type rather than the traditional triangular type which to me indicates "rifle case". If you have to put your rifle in the passenger area no need to further advertise what's in the case.

Keep in mind that a soft gun case satisfies California law, but federal law requires the case to be locked if passing through any school zones.

Only handguns have to be in a locked container. Longguns only have to be in a locked container if the container if not one designed to hold a firearm. The exception to this is if you're in a school zone.

California has the same law on the books.

CA does not regulate long guns passing through school zones - that's a Federal law. CA's GFSZ applies to handguns.

CA locked case for long guns applies to out of vehicle carry, in an incorporated area, in a case that is not designed for guns (e.g. a guitar case).

I do have a pelican case that might fit in the passenger side. Hopefully that would be ok - with a couple of padlocks on it.

                Do not panic.
A rifle soft case is all that you need.
Only locked by school zone as stated before.

You are making more of it than needed.
