    Gunshop review

    Helm's House of Guns
    A.K.A - This Ain't Yo' Mama's House

I moved to Sonoma County a few months ago (transfered by my employer) and have been very busy with work and family. Have not had much opportunity to check out the local gun shops until a couple of weeks ago. I decide make the rounds and visited several shops in Petaluma and Santa Rosa with my son.

Helm's House of Guns had a nice little 'Chipmunk 22', I have been considering getting one for my son because my .22's are just too large for him. Spoke with a very friendly heavy set gentlemen about the gun, had my son check it out and decided to buy it. Maybe more expensive than I could have found elsewhere but the fellow was nice and they had the gun in stock. My son was happy and so was I. Salesman commented how well behaved my son was, saying he wished other folks that brought there kids in would have there kids acting as well. Paid and started DROS

This Thursday was 10 days +1 and I was able to get away from work a couple of hours early so decided tp drive to the Helm's and pick the gun rather than waiting till Saturday and having to spend a few hours on my day-off driving to Santa Rosa. I get to Helm's at about 4:00-4:30. Upon entering the thin salesman asks "what can I do for you"?, "I'm here to pick-up a rifle", he responds "you got something for me"? I explained that I had just come from work and the decision to pick the gun up that day was last minute, so I didn't have my receipt or copy of DROS. He says in a rude tone "right on your receipt it says you have to bring a photocopy of your Drivers License". "OK, could you tell me where I can find a kinko's or some place to make a copy"? Instead of telling me where to go so I can make a copy the salesman goes into a tirade, telling me "it's your Drivers License, why should I have to make a copy of it it's your resposibility". I started wondering whats up with this guy's attitude. Me wondering if they have a copier but just don't want to use it, so I ask if they have one [seems to make sense since they need to keep copies on file, heck every business I know that needs to make a lot copies has a copy machine and you can get an inexpensive one for next to nothing]. He says "No, I don't make copies because I ain't yo'mama". This guy was a belligerent jerk and I told him so, loud and clear for a couple minutes. This idiot salesman kept on ranting and raving with a raised voice like a lunatic "why the hell should we have to invest in a copier for your benefit"?

Finally the heavy set gentlemen that sold us the rifle came over, I asked him what this guy's problem was and why does he talk to his customer this way? He had an embarrased look on his face that told me this was not the first time this had happened. He showed me a shop a few doors down that would be happy to make a copy for me. I thanked him, got a copy from the friendly man at the cash register repair shop, that obviously makes copies for Helm's customers regularly, went back and finished the DROS paperwork with the heavy set guy and left.

I will never go back to that shop unless that belligerent salesmen is gone, for good.

Damn, I've never been to an FFL that didn't make their own copy of my license. THEY need the copy, it's part of the DROS paperwork, why should I have to make it? It's part of their frickin job.
I hate people that are full of hate.

It's not illegal to tip for PPT!

That's sad. I'm glad someone there was cool. People need to realize we (gun enthusiasts) are pretty much on our own here. We need to stick together.

It's a small shop with two employees, not really sure who is or how to contact the management.

I have a similar situation at work. Unfortunately the jerk is the owner's son.
The dad has tried talking to him but nothing seems to work.
Might be the same situation at that gun store.

As the ex-owner of a gun store, I've encountered this problem with employees... they get a power trip from being "the guy behind the counter" and act that way, and expect everybody to excuse and even support this behavior. These guys last about 1/2 hour in the shop here. I would tell my guys that the only thing we really have to offer is our respect. It's an easy sell if we are not rude and condescending to customers (as are the other 3 local shops). We are the nicest and most freindly customer oriented store- and we usually dont have to play price wars- we have a loyal 4000 man following that never even check around at the other shops. And we don't take advantage of that relationship either- we keep track of spending, and visits and keep notes on what they buy, when, etc... We bend over backwards to make your experience a good one.

I tell the guys- you can make a man happier than he's ever been, and he will tell a freind. If you piss him off, he'll publish it in the local paper. A shop canot afford to make enemies.

With that, there are still guys that cannot be pleased or reasoned with- I even have a few negative reviews on this site- but that's life.

And yes, Helms should fire the guy immediately- not for your benefit, but their own.

...or maybe we get a rope! String him up in the town square at noon!

Shouldn't they have an f'n copier?

Every FFL should be required, as making copies of DLs and HSC cards should be an everyday occurance.

They actually send customers down to a copy place to do it themselves? Ugghhh

What is customer service coming to?

+1. Every FFL I've been to has had a copier and just copied my license as part of the DROS process. I always bring a copy of my license to gun shops with me....
