    "Testing the waters" threads

What's the deal with all of the "testing the waters" threads in the classifieds sections? They bug the crap out of me for some reason and I don't know how the rest of you feel.

I guess it bothers me because I feel that the posters are basically trying to create an off forum auction to see how much they can scrape out of members here.

I agree and it would come to an end if the mods would delete their posts. Until then, it'll continue.
I'm not sure if the "testing the waters" posts or those that reply and try to pry a price out of them bothers me more. Either way, I avoid them if the subject line indicates thats all they are.

Me too. Do homework and post an ad in the classifieds. The help me pick a price threads belong somewhere else.

I've got this old bolt action rifle that belonged to my grandfather while he was a sniper on the eastern front, complete with matching numbered l block mounts, and 4x90 scope, old leather cover, dimpled butt plate, and cleaning kit, now I'd never think of selling it, but how much money do you think its worth?

I thought those were against the rules for exactly this reason.

Mostly guys hoping their guns are worth way more than they really are. They Hope that someone will realize how kool the seller of the gun must be and decide to pay 3X what the gun is worth.

Usually comes from a Desert Eagle owner and involves chrome and or gold. Or, my Grandfather's all original hardchromed Luger he captured from a NAZI general.

Best way to fight that is to submit a large 'testing the waters' bid or offer. This way you can retract it later on when they decide to really sell it. They would have no recourse since it wasn't an official listing.

I just wish people would put down what area they live in. You can be vague but at least a region of the state.
I move slow but I make up for it by shooting poorly.

When I hit the lotto I'm only shooting factory.
