It's a good way to mitigate recoil in the standing unsupported position.

Holding the rifle far out on the handguard is neither something that Chris Costa pioneered, nor is it new. From what I understand, holding the rifle farther out on the handguard started as a competition technique, which worked its way over to the military. It doesn't necessarily help stability, because neither hand is going to be near to the center of gravity and you'll tire more quickly (keeping the center of gravity in front of your hands means that it's harder to transmit hand movement to the rifle). What it gives you is better control of recoil, as well as aiding your ability to move the rifle between targets quickly and precisely. Unload your rifle and try it in your home. Set up three targets about a yard apart, and stand several yards back. Now pretend you're doing an El Presidente Drill, and see which technique is easier to stop your rifle in the center of each target without overshooting, or slowing down way early.
Here are a couple videos featuring people who have a bit of trigger time, and use variants of the technique.

It works better. Try three mags even if you don't switch over, you may see the point
Support thumb points to target and is over the top but not quite the spine/top rail
Just point ur support thumb where you want rounds to go
Thumb gets you close, optic/sights get you precision
Costa did a good job in the video above IMO"You will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve your freedom. I hope you will make good use of it."

Actually, this vid just happened to pop up on YouTube and I thought it was entertaining. I know why he does what he does. But it was fun to watch him mag dump an M60.Originally posted by kcbrownI'm most famous for my positive mental attitude.
