Excellent LEO interaction with open carriers

I'm not a fan of the LEO bashing around here. I believe most LEO's support our second amendment rights. They also walk an incredibly fine line between supporting those rights and putting themselves in harms way when contacting fellow citizens who may wish to do them harm.

I've never seen this video posted on CG before. My apologies if this is a dupe. My opinion is that the officer does an excellent job throughout the contact and shows the respect and professionalism that we all expect from LEO's. Will every LEO react this way? Probably not. Individuals will have their own reactions. But kudos to Officer Estes for handling himself and representing his department in a fine manner.

I think the college kids were well intentioned. Their hypothesis was that a cop would badger the group for the OC as well as filming. They were wrong and via subsequent videos and posts, they've admitted as much.

I don't think he is one in 100. I think most officers feel like he does, at least where I live. I haven't spoken to an officer or deputy in my city that didn't fully voice their support for the 2A and our gun rights. I know the culture is different where I live versus LA (which us where I was born and raised). I also know that department policy and politics also play into the LEO response.

Still, I felt strongly enough about how impressed I was with the officer that I emailed his department and told them what I thought. I hope Officer Estes gets a letter of Commendation from his Chief, if he hasn't ready gotten one.

I live in Bakersfield. I lived and worked in Fresno and Clovis for 3 years back in 2000. I've been through DUI checkpoints in all three cities. I've never had a problem.

I don't know what issues you have had in Fresno, but just read some of the stories in the paper around about all the violence. You had gangs such as the Bulldogs and other gangs threathen the lives of a police officers in Fresno. So much and so creditible that Fresno PD in the last year pulled some motor shifts and doubled some areas up.

For those of you that are old enough to remeber all the violence around Fresno in the early to mid 1990's I think were once again very close to seeing the Fresno PD put their SWAT back on the street due to the violence.

I am not against people's rights but from a law enforcement stand point, this kids are just being plain stupid. Who would walk around with a rifle in the city after all the violence that has happened across America. If this had occurred where I worked at we would have put all the officers on our shift (normally 5 to 6 officers on patrol division) responding to a call of a man with a gun. There would have been a lot of wasted resources on this event, resources that are limited by budgets anyway.

California had open carry law made because of people wasting time like this. We can be pro gun or anti gun people it doesn't matter it is just not normal for this behavior.

How many of us won't think something was odd or scarey if somebody walked by your house carrying a rifle? Especially with all the violence in American. I would have called 9-1-1 immediately upon seeing a armed subject

Not all LEOS are "A: Holes, but there are enough uninformed anti gun gung Ho leos out there to make peoples lives miserable.
Had a good experience last week when my son broke an upper A Arm on his truck in the San Berdu National Forest.
He walked out to the road to meet me as I had his parts and he was carrying a .40 on his hip. A San Berdu Sheriif drove by him, slowed down and looked and waved to him and went on his way.
Some are understanding and some are dough heads, too bad the good ones don't teach the dough heads what is up.
Dont get me wrong there are times they should stop and ask questions depending on the circumstances.

                            Yeah, super Duper.

But as many have said, the Cop was trying to be as nice as he could, the guys making the film tried their hardest to be *******s about it all. I totally respect people doing everything they can for 2A rights, but they need to try and respect the people who are responsible for dealing with interactions between everyday civilians and legislation (aka the police).

At the very least when he was first asked by the Cop he could have given his first name to make the conversation friendlier and disarm hostilities from the get go.

Oh well, hindsight 20/20 and all that.

Part of the coolness was he got them to comply with his requests without getting his department sued and/or the escalating the situation.

The OC'ers ended up answering his questions while going away happy with the interaction. Esp interesting since, IMO, their goal going out was to not comply or answer LEO questions.
