    Sharing a cool old gun . . .

We've been looking for a .357 Magnum lever gun for a while. Found this one in Reno this weekend. A circa 1911 Winchester 1892 "Take Down" lever gun. It was converted from .25-20WCF to .357 Magnum, likely in the 50's or 60's. Very cool gun.

All 1892 "Take Down" rifles were special order. So . . . bummer it got converted to .357 Mag. Oh well . . . I get to enjoy it now. For me this is way better than spending a grand on an import.

They even reused the original barrel! Just drilled it out and rifled it. Try to get someone to do that same job today . . . good luck.

That is awesome. I'm conflicted about the caliber change because it probably devalues the rifle but it does make finding ammo easier

            Oh yeah it did.

Just went out and put ~100 rounds of .38 Long Colt, .38 Special and .357 Magnum. Everything went bang. Did not shoot groups, just at some steel plates, jacks and some reactive targets.

The .38 wadcutters did not feed so well, single fed them. Everything else worked just fine. From a pop so quite no ears were required to a very healthy boom from some hot .357's. Can really tell the .357's had way more power out of the rifle than my revolvers.

I have an ear to ear grin.

Sweet find! Did you stumble across it during your trip, or was this the reason for your trip?

Bummer it got converted indeed, I'm intrigued by old calibers. I'd still be happy to have it though, don't get me wrong! Cool find.

Nice rifle but re-boring old barrels is pretty common. Here's a link that list companies that do it:

That is a seriously cool old rifle. There's no way to know if the reboring saved it or devalued it but it's going to be a great one to own and shoot.
